I think it would be cool to tell people that if the moon blew up, crashed into the planet.

"Did you know we used have 2 moons in the game? Yeah it crashed into Gridania, that's why it's so different now from when the game first started, and now we have 1 moon"

Well, if the red is black and the white is red...this can only mean one thing: Menphina is on heat and chained Dalamud far away so it wouldn't bite Oschon's "bow".

Or it does can still means an eclipse...solar one though! If you align all 3 indeed the moon would become red (depending of the soil composition...assuming this a FF world we can always assume the moon is made of crystal, being a prismatic object that can turn red depending of light insertion) and Dalamud, covered by Menphina size, would stay black while in the dark, only turning red again when the sunlight can reach it.

On Earth (yes, in real life), the full moon will turn blood red during a lunar eclipse. It's a property of light wavelengths only allowing the red frequencies to get around the rim of the earth and reach the moon.

Something simmilar may be possible on Hydaelyn.

    That's no moon?

I had a second talk with the lore-masters about the artwork, and after several bouts of poking, prodding, and pleading, they finally broke and here's what they told me I could tell you: the smaller moon with the mysterious "appendages" is, in fact, Dalamud. The reason it is not red, as it has been noted as being in several quests, is supposedly because it is partially shadowed. So, to answer the 100,000 gil question--there is nothing wrong with the art, with the matter of "hue" being left open to interpretation.

I know that doesn't answer all of your questions, but I hope it helps a little! Keep the discussion alive!

    Oh, and great pics Jinrya-Geki!
Thank you for answering, Fernie, although something is still not clear...

Uhm, so if there're no mistakes in that picture and the smaller object with spikes is indeed Dalamud, meaning the big red moon is Menphina, I wonder what's the reason behind the change in their color. It's like Menphina “absorbed” the red hue of Dalamud that we've been used to see in Eorzea's night sky in the last weeks... but why?

Well, hopefully in patch 1.19 we'll understand more on this, including the mysterious “spikes” of Dalamud. After First Serpent Lieutenant Syro Fulke revealed that according to some scouters the enemies in The Thousand Maws of Toto-Rak were over nine thousand...

...I wonder if someone will reveal us, about Dalamud... That's no moon...

Hopefully we'll find out by the end of September!

It appears as though I've already given you your answer.

In regards to the lore behind why Menphina is red, I'd say that this time (the coming of the 7th Umbral Era), calamity is so severe that it's not only Dalamud's blood being spilled in protecting her, Menphina is tasting her own.

This! ^^ Also, if it happens to be a double eclipse it would happen of Dalamud becoming pitch black while covered.

And is part of folklore werewolves borning during bloodmoon! Once again pointing to halloween! ^^

As I was reading all these posts I came up with my own hypothesis... I think the tech that Garlean got their hands on is tech from another age, like age of the ancients or what everyone refers to as gods now (kind of like in XIII) The Garleans heard there is more of this tech in Eorzea in Toto-Rak and the Darkhold, which explain's some of that old tech we find with the quest's inside of Toto-rak and such. I believe that "Dalamund" is like the penultimate weapon from that ancient generation, and Garlean had found out about it and Activated it and it is now moving to us. (Kind of like the Death Star Reference)

Like with all great theories, I think the truth is a mix of it all - but I think you're right about Dalamud being the ultimate form of whatever the Empire is using.
