It's hard not to picture Iroha as an introduction to Sam, but... unlike Higiri, she hasn't shown any actual Samurai traits besides her outfit. She uses a "glaive," but she wields it with the same skills as a Lancer. Even her special ability gets no showtime.
Shes using lancer skills cause her unique skills of a samurai wasn't made XIV, the one skill she used doing the final fate battle was one of her unique skills from final fantasy XI which is an aoe attack but sadly it was only created for that *one* event for looks. The samurai skills range from using a bow skills, using a glaive weapon, and katana weapon.

In ffxi samurais had an A in samurai swords, b in polearms, and c in archery I believe. I personally always loved using spears with my samurai despite it being frowned upon.

But yeah tachi: xxx was samurai skills. Regardless though I doubt they would make her have unique animations and attacks just for a quick event... Which explains her combat

I figured as much, and I know the system in FFXI was much different. So it's not like it doesn't make sense she was using lancer skills.

What I meant, though, was that, during the "through the maelstrom" patch, Higiri and Thancred were shown off in cutscenes using dual knife skills. Obviously none of them were named or showcased using hotbar demonstrations, but it was a huge indicator that the ninja patch was imminent. For one, the knife usage made it pretty clear what kind of skills and weapons the Ninja class would be using, and some of those skills had animations. The "attack stance," for example, had already been finalized by that patch, and the pose you see Thancred and Higiri using made it into the final version. I was hoping this event was going to showcase similar hints for the Samurai class. Unfortunately, it did not.

The fact that she used the standard Lancer stance and attacks leads me to believe that it's just too early, either in development or in patches, for them to give us more solid hints about how the Samurai class will look/play. This also leads me to believe that there may possibly be more events, quests, or even MSQ events (like with the Ninja job) on the way that will give us more. IF Iroha is the introduction to the Samurai job (which I think we're all pretty much assuming she is at this point) than it would make sense that they kept her around for the purpose of bringing her back to fill the same role that Higiri did with the Samurai. Step one: give us the character. Step two: show us the weapon, stance, and moves. Step 3: roll out the job.

Hopefully we can all look forward to this.

Let me tell you two useful pieces of information:
    • Yugiri is the Auri ninja who fights alongside you. Higiri is probably a ninja as well, but is more behind the scenes and spends most of her time as a cook in Revenant's Toll.
    • While there is no official confirmation, we can be reasonably sure SAM is going to show up in 4.0. It was between that and DRK for 3.0, but they didn't want to add another Eastern-flavored class so soon after NIN. Additionally, if you talked to Yoshi-P again after the event during this year's Rising, he implied if not outright stated they want to add SAM and RDM.

Ah, my mistake. I had the wrong name. Yugiri was the one I meant, but at least you knew who I was talking about. Thank you for the correction.

And I do recall the comments Yoshi-P made concerning the upcoming Samurai job. Personally, I was happy they went with Drk before Sam. I think they were right that two eastern jobs so close to one another would have been overkill, and it would have risked one outshining the other, depending on what job class they make Sam (I dunno about other servers, but the bandwagon for Ninja was pretty intense on my server). If anything, though, this should only serve to prove that we have more events to look forward to. They've still got plenty of time to work up more Sam hype if they're waiting for 4.0, assuming that's what they are aiming for.

It's also possible that they might pull a pre-expansion release like they did with Ninja. After all, Nin had a lot of in-game build up before they released it in a patch, whereas Drk/Astro/and Mch all had majority of their hype built up in Expansion related press conferences and trailers. There haven't been enough expansions or evidence to say that SE will follow the same trend (or to even call it a trend) at this point, but if there ends up being more than one Samurai related event, then I'd say it's at least a possibility. After all, it would be fairly strange for them to go out of their way to provide in-game advertisement for only one upcoming job in an expansion when there are likely to be more.

As for the Rising event, there were a lot of things hinted in that room. There's actually two people in a corner somewhere who are arguing over which mage should come next. One was arguing in favour of Red and the other in favour of... blue, I think. I can't remember. It could have been green. Either way, my money is on Red (seems to be the more popularly demanded job), but we'll have to wait and see since, unlike Sam, they've not hinted anything for those jobs one way or the other. They did, however, hint at a few Primals and/or dungeons. The guy who was looking for the "Doomtrain" model he'd misplaced made me pretty happy. My first thought is Primal, since Doomtrain is traditionally a summon, but it wouldn't be so unusual to have a dungeon take place within Doomtrain too.

Can we be satisfied believing the only connection between main Final Fantasy titles is the void?
It lets the worlds be separate, but also provides a fluffy reason for crossovers.

The void is the ultimate time-space deus ex machina for parallel worlds.

It literally allows the "It is but it isn't" situation to be a logical answer. (Where as with out such a thing it would be counter logic)

It was blue, and Yoshi even mentioned he wanted blu in the game but they couldn't balance it correctly at that time.

If they do add blue mage, they better not muck it up. I found the XI version of blu the absolute perfect version of what that job should be. But it is SE, they could make blu or rdm a tank or healers for all we know. Which would surely upset many since they are mostly thought of as battle mage classes by the masses and this game could use a good battle mage.

Yes? I'd rather the games stand on their own two legs than rely on nostalgia and crossovers to maintain the series' relevance... when it needs or banks on nostalgia to sell, y'know something's wrong...

I thought Yoshi-P said he wanted to add Red Mage, if you went back and talked to him again after this year's Rising.

A couple devs outside were bickering between Red and Blue, but I'm fairly sure Yoshi-P hisself said Red Mage and Samurai were serious contenders for 4.0 (if not absolutely certainly going to be added).
