Well, if it's any consolation, the Japanese voices appear to be the same. It's regrettable but with the English actors not on contract they're going to be cycling voices... alot. It's probably why...

Like, if you want to build a consistant character that people can feel any kind of bond to, it would probably help to not change the voice entirely with every single patch o.O

I can't even imagine having to deal with that. I always had Japanese audio on and I think the voices are pretty much the same since day one.
My immersion would be so broken by constant re-casting of VAs.

Edit: looks like I misread that, his entire appearance and not just his voice. I think they were trying to "mature" him in a way though.

All these voice changes are a concern, I like that they got rid of some of the downright bad actors of 2.0, but now that we've got some decent ones will they continue on this? Are we going to get a new voice for Alphinaud every expansion pack now? I don't like Y'shtola new voice, sounds too stiff, but I'm sure the VA will improve given enough time. There was one scene where she sounded pretty good in the latest MSQ quests.

I fear this might happen, I fear that after getting used to to the new voice actors and accepting them, they will change it in 4.0.

I can see your point in this regard, but as a man myself, he just comes off as more generic now, and less appealing as a character. If I was forming a party in a game, I'd take the old version over the new one without a second thought. I'm not saying the change from how he was before to how he is now can't be done, or can't be done well, but it needs to be something that happens a little more gradually. I will accept SE's reasons for why he changed, as they would understandably change anyone over time, but I think it could have been handled more smoothly.....

Thancred is a workaholic and Cid isn't. Thancred ran himself ragged trying to fill in for Lusiaux while Cid never shows up for work at his own business.
