TBH I don't blame him. I know he was a visionary, but honestly he is out of touch with todays MMO market. I blame Wada.Tanaka's done too much for Final Fantasy to be shown as much disrespect as he has been for being out of touch with MMOs. Personally, I think that's his only real flaw; that his methods didn't evolve as fast as online gaming did. Yoshi-P is more in touch with what an MMO needs, but that fact extends only to that reality, imho.
Do you remember when Wada said that FFXIV was going to "Dethrone World of Warcraft?" lol -- I don't think you're wrong in your finger pointing by any means.

I face palmed when he stated that. Even if XIV had a successful launch, it wouldn't have come close enough to dethrone WoW. Nothing can except maybe another Blizzard MMO can.
It revealed his lack of comprehension to say it that way at all. WOW is an MMO that fulfills the desires of people who prefer that style of MMO. FF Online provides an entirely different experience, and the group of people who want that particular experience are outnumbered by the people who want the experience provided by WOW. It's as simple as that.
Saying that Final Fantasy Online could "dethrone" WoW is like saying that Cheezits will dethrone the meat food group. It not only sounds entirely unrealistic, but it doesn't make any godsdamned sense.
EDIT: And if Wada was a genius, he wouldn't have told his people to release a game that was only 20% completed onto the shelves because people will pay for it if it says Final Fantasy on the cover.

FFXIV is becoming a WoW clone now though. It revealed his lack of comprehension to say it that way at all. WOW is an MMO that fulfills the desires of people who prefer that style of MMO. I guess Wada is pulling the strings again.
That's why he hand-picked Yoshi to begin with.
"I want one young go-getter to make this game into WoW as fast as possible! Any volunteers?"
I find it pretty shortsighted to call anything a [X]Clone. In the world of MMOs, we're all playing Dungeons & Dragons, but we're all playing with radically different DMs who are varying levels of competent in what their friend group finds "Fun."
If WoW has good things to offer the future of MMOs, those traits should live on -- hopefully the WoW we take in will replace the aspects of FFXI that made it a rather masochistic addiction at times.
I doubt we'll ever move too too far out of the sandbox though. When I see a Skill Tree, I'll give you your silver for a wise prediction.

WoW is incompatible with www.finalfantasyxiv.com so to increase one's WoW-ness is to decrease one's FFXIV-ness.I find it pretty shortsighted to call anything a [X]Clone. It's not necessarily improvement going from one to the other. It is merely change.
improvement is trusting one's own original vision and acting to achieve it.
Whats happening under Yoshi's regime is not "getting the best of both worlds". It's merely "replacing one world for another". Emulation =/= improvement.
The higher-ups clearly think a WoW-model will generate more fi$cal revenue, so I guess that's why Yoshi was chosen despite his evident inadequacy with respect to innovation.
I think one of the other general issues, is that marketing should never run a project in development. The situation here perfectly fits that scenario. They knew MMOs are cash cows from prior experience and wanted the quick way to that cash flow. I'm sure that Tanaka and others in charge of the project did not want to release with the state the game was in. That's part of why I don't entirely fault him here.It revealed his lack of comprehension to say it that way at all. WOW is an MMO that fulfills the desires of people who prefer that style of MMO. FF Online provides an entirely different experience, and the group of people who want that particular experience are outnumbered by the people who want the experience provided by WOW. Yoichi Wada is a genius in finances and business, but retarded in video game design. Wada should never have had as much pull as he did on the title, but hey that's one of the luxuries of being president of Square Enix, you have the ability to over step your boundaries...
