Why not get both?

It's not like the game doesn't have a perfect vendor to hand out old event rewards at (Gold saucer) Not only would it give players a reason to continualy participate in things like the cactpot it gives the saucer and seasonal events themselves a constantly building base to grow on. Instead of being a small event every year they can do what they are doing add a new item and event and keep the old rewards on a vendor or just shunt them to the gold saucer on their off season god forbit they continue to build on systems they introduce to the game instead of leaving them for dead for half a year.

That would be in interesting idea, placing them on MGP would ensure players are able to get them, but not buy them cheaply for Gil, while the Cash Shop would still exists as an easier method (You did mention the Cactpot, so I would assume these would be Cloud/Fenrir tier of expensive at least)

I'd rather pay $3-5 for old event items rather than farming 1,000,000 MGP. If it was one or the other, I believe cash shop is the better option.

How much does 1m MGP take to make, 100+ hours? Now I'm sure most people wouldn't consider $5 a lot of money, it's a rather miniscule amount comparable to two bottled waters at most. But 100? That's a lot of time for everyone, and I don't know about anyone else, but I don't have 100 hours to blow away grinding on a spooky ghost sheet. 50,000 MPG? Sure, but if it's 1 million I'd prefer the cash shop.
