They should kill off Cid or another major character to make Alexander feel like a threat. Imagine if, once activated, Alexander Tempers Cid and we're forced to put him out of his own misery - without any convenient plot devices to spare him. It'd show that there's a lot at stake. Aesthetically I find Alexander to be pretty cool, though I'm not too fond of Goblins since they're a bit too comical and don't feel like a threat.

Right? I don't think I can take the death of another character I actually like. I'd rather Alexander gets off its lazy butt, crushes Milde and finally obliterates all goblins like so.

I've never really cared for him. He's a poor excuse for a Garlean - I'd much prefer someone like Drace or Gabranth to be the main Garlean character that we frequently interact with. Someone with sympathetic motives who remains loyal to their homeland - which would, in my opinion, be much more engaging than Cid. But that's just me.

The man or not, I agree with Theodric's overall idea.

Few stories have gotten me as involved as ones with memorable characters dying. It's a smart choice to make a plot more engaging. Stories where things are happily ever after forever and characters die but don't actually die and show up again get so tiring after a while.

Stories where you kill off the few memorable characters aren't great either, there is a place for killing off characters, but that doesn't mean it should be done to make the story "memorable" and then worse afterwards. I dislike this trend Game of Thrones seems to have started, games, movies and shows try to mimic it but it never works out due to them not having likeable enough characters that remain alive. Recently I've been thinking worse of a story if it kills off an important character for very little purpose other than to have an effect on the player, it was done once recently, we don't need another death so soon afterwards.

All it takes is one glance at some of things said about some of the characters dying in FFXIV even to see that it gets people talking, it gets people feeling, it's an effective strategy for making an involving story, whether or not you personally want to see characters die, it works.

At the same time, it doesn't work if it's pulled off ineffectively, and you're ultimately going to shoot yourself in the leg for future plot development (unless you want to undo said death or someone else takes up his mantle, which imo makes even less sense). We'd have to go to someone else for our technological needs if the person we're killing off is Cid (whom is also a legacy character throughout the franchise)

Agreed. That's why they should do it effectively, as they did with
    Haurchefant

I'm also not saying it should or shouldn't be Cid, hence why I just said I agreed with the overall idea Theodric had. The death of one character doesn't necessarily mean the death of the role the character plays either. Often it introduces an opportunity for a new character's appearance who can fill a similar role.
