Marrying for the 2nd time

I was married once on another server, and am now looking to remarry. Has anyone ever done this before? I thought it was just as easy as throwing away your eternity ring. My ex-partner isnt even on this server. Turns out you can't even throw away these eternity rings. If I have one in my retainer will I still be able to get married, just with one in my retainer and one in my inventory? Anyone who's married more than once, what steps did you have to take?
