As others have stated, it's for the transfer of wold servers on the European data center. Those servers are going to be down much longer than the stated time. So take the time to do something different. Wildstar has gone recently gone free to play and that would be a perfectly good time to play it. Or there's EverQuest 1 & 2, both are free to play, and Guild Wars 2 is free to play, too. So there's plenty to do while those servers are down.

Like how Capcom took Resident Evil and gave it a graphical face lift now known as Resident Evil Remastered (or REmake), I had wished FFXIV did the same thing.
