Maybe there is a big picture, but SE are yet to articulate it. And if it's to be deduced from the myriad of quotes all over the place, then the direction seems really shallow and hardly attractive at all.

Well golly it's not Yoshi's fault that he has to go through and fix the previous producer's problems.http://www.mmoculture.com/2011/07/ch...ew-on-mmo.html

He actually gives a "big picture" for what the MMO should be like. Rather than just saying "we might add this thing here" and "cut this feature here" "just because".
GW2 devs are the same. If you just go to their main site, they release huge articles about their features and why they decide to implement features in that specific way and how it will make their game a success.
Yoshi's just like "yeah let's just implement this because someone complained". There's just no big picture. sorry.
Hey looky here, here's an interview that talks about Yoshi's plans for the future (vision) for this game.
Hell there's another another interview that Reinheart translated from that FFXIV gaming book. You should go read it, also Azury should too because all the info you guys want is out there in the interviews.

1st, from my own experience (Figaro server) i see more and more people playing lately, but it might be different for other worlds.Great leaders are often great visionaries, working towards an idealistic goal.
Right now many people have taken a break, or are playing less, waiting to see if the game becomes something that appeals to them. Currently, the future of this game is somewhat unknown.
Thus, I think it is appropriate to ask you to answer a simple question:
What is your vision for this games future, be it 1 year or 2 years, or even further down the road?
If you could magically re-design the game the way you want overnight, how would it look and feel? Would there be lots of dungeons? lots of giant roaming monsters? what would the average journey be like? etc.
Please just tell us what direction you would like to see the game go in, so that some of us can decide whether to start playing again and prepare, or wait a bit longer and see what changes come.
You don't have to commit to anything. It would just be nice to see how you envision the game in the future, even if it ends up being nothing like that. Just so we can have -some- idea as to what to expect.
Thank you.
2nd, as for Yoshi-P's vision, as he said before he wants FFXIV to become the FF7 of mmos. I'm glad we have him in charge as not only is he a great developper with a great career ahead of himself, he's also a big gamer and mmo player. He said it himself, he does play or used to play a lot of mmo out there... IMO only a person who has experienced MMOs first hand can understand what needs to be done and how to go about making a good mmorpg.
Fixing the previous producer's problems how? and which ones? and why? People perceive different things as problems and have different solutions. This requires vision to filter perceived problems, and I simply don't see any vision in the recent decisions, sorry to say.Well golly it's not Yoshi's fault that he has to go through and fix the previous producer's problems.

As for all those interview, they don't say anything worthwhile other than "let's add some content and dumb down the game" and then some vague allusion to a "conductor approach" and something about "making the game less grindy" without specifying how.
And saying "you can do whatever and there'll be heaps of content" doesn't inspire confidence when I see them destroying more than they are creating.

Most people have played an MMO, not all are cut out to be directors.1st, from my own experience (Figaro server) i see more and more people playing lately, but it might be different for other worlds.

Yoshi's philosophy of adding lots and lots of content might come back to haunt him considering their current production rate. I mean, he says there'll be lots to do, but I don't see much to do in the upcoming patches unless you count boring sidequests and a dumbed down standard-bash crafting system with no depth. I don't know... such is life I guess.
I mean, everything we've got so far is expected content anyway. Like, this is what any producer would be giving us as MMO players. But Yoshi is a special case because not every director would also ruin crafting and the armory system and have no vision beyond that. Which is what stimulates discussions like this. People want to be able to see the master plan, but can't.

"So like, we want to add lots of content so everyone will have something to do, and like, we probably won't have as much quests as SW:ToR and it won't be voiced either like SW:ToR or Guild Wars2 or TERA or Blade&Soul, and like, players will be able to play with eachother, even though we will deemphasise community by downplaying the player-run economy, and like, the quests won't be dynamic like GW2 or Secret World, and your character won't speak during cutscenes like in SW:ToR, but like, hopefully it will all work out in the end, even though we intend to undermine the armory system which is our flagship feature... oh and maybe you can like swim too? But we will see about it, even though Aion, GW2, ArcheAge, TERA and B&S all already have swimming too. So like... our game will be better than everything else because it's just like everything else but without voiceovers and stuff... and we are kind of slow at releasing content too... so we hope everyone enjoys the game even though it might not release the contents very fast."

*popcorn*
"No one is less ready for tomorrow than the person who holds the most rigid beliefs about what tomorrow will contain."
— Watts Wacker
that's right, i used a quote to seem intelligent....

I wouldn't get comfy with that popcorn, I've had him on ignore for hours now with no intention whatsoever to ever remove him from ignore. This way I cannot see his posts and so will not reply to them :P
However should you want a response for your quote:
I hold a rigid belief that FFXIV is only going to get better
Userhalfamillionstupidnumbers has a rigid belief that the game will only become more and more broken
I would win however, and I also have the rigid belief that he is 1: wrong in his belief and 2: too stupid to realise it
This is how religion works 9 times out of 10.
This was just posted by Yoshi-P, maybe you'll find what you're looking for in the next letter.
Starting this post I will make several posts in the next few days, but I would like to post in the next letter about how I see overall direction of FFXIV and current generation MMORPG. Please read through that also once the letter is released.
....but saying that, with current work load the letter most likely going to be right before patch 1.19 release. Up til then, we are planning to release the requested video which shows the progress of 1.19
