Anyone feel like FFXIV wasn't supposed to a Final Fantasy game?

I remember a LONG time back, at some Vana'diel fest (or whatever it's called), there was an interview/panel where they mentioned something about a next gen mmo. And if I remember correctly, they were still deciding whether or not to give it the FF name, or Valkyrie Profile, or something else. So it is possible. I wish I could remember where that interview was.

Thats exactly what got me thinking as I remember hearing a while back that SE's next MMO was not going to be a Final Fantasy one. However I have just done a search on Rapture as that was the first thing SE had as a codename for the MMO and it seems they announced in August 2005 that they had already begun development on their next MMO codename Rapture. AUGUST 2005????? What have they been doing for the last 5 and a half years? I knew it had been in the making for a while but not that long

Tanaka has no clue how to make games any more. He spent 5 and a half years trying to figure out how to make the game as user unfriendly as possible to prevent RMT.

A part of me wants to say that missing MMORPG was Ambrosia Odyssey, but that was ultimately scrapped.

Final Fantasy 11 and 14 do not feel like "Final Fantasy" games short of being in a universe where similar monster designs, job titles, and concepts are used.

But I do think that most Final Fantasy games use the "Final Fantasy" name to sell more copies. Akin to how Gundam Musou is named Dynasty Warriors: Gundam to snag both the Dynasty Warriors fans and Gundam fans, even though it has (at least in my mind) nothing to do with Dynasty Warriors setting wise.
