It shouldn't be locked onto logging in, but just subscribing as they're still paying for it and there are always special circumstances where they may not be able to log in for extended periods of time. If they're planning on leaving for a long time, then selling the house for a profit is always an option.
By that logic, I feel we might as well just archive/delete characters who haven't subbed for a year because they take up server resources as well, that'd free up more space than housing would I'd imagine. 'Server resources' being so scarce apparently to development options and purposes.

This is absolutely not even the same argument. Active housing zone resources are not the same thing as in-active character resources.

The real solution to this would be to just give everyone an upgradeable housing plot. The only reason that houses cost anything at all is so that SE does not have to invest the resources necessary for everyone to have a house. WoW and Wildstar have both made this investment, despite Wildstar faring far poorer than FFXIV financially so far(they are going f2p soon).

If they add more wards, people with money will just buy up all the plots again. I know several people who have multiple houses for just their characters.

If the aim of housing was to sink gil out of circulation, then that cost could be shifted to upgrades for said plots.

As far as I'm aware, characters are put away when not logged in and not constantly taking up any server resources similar to retainers. That's why only current online characters have any effect on the queue. Housing on the other side of things is constantly not only constantly putting strain on the servers, but an extremely limited and valuable resource. If characters were constantly being taken up by inactive characters you'd bet they'd be deleted or archived and put back in 24-ish hours after you've subbed or something like that. That's how all MMOs do it, WoW has what, over 100 million accounts not including trials, probably 200+ million with them? You honestly believe 300+ million characters are constantly straining their servers?

If they instanced houses they could utilise the same system, but they seem incredibly stubborn on the only real solution.

I actually don't mind the idea of "upgradeable" housing. However, not sure how this would work since the wards are plotted out with specific plot sizes in mind.

They really need to restrict housing to 1 house per account per server and allow players to share that property amongst their alt characters. This "I own 10 houses across all my alts and alt FC's" needs to stop.

But it's such an obvious solution that I have to think there's some issue we aren't aware of keeping that from happening, probably the skeleton of 1.0's terrible infrastructure.

Should limit 1 house per account for at least a month after initial release.

I hope that given the major infrastructure changes coming in October more space will be available to add sufficient housing wards for all free companies to have a house, especially given that having your own FC airship will apparently give benefits over the Ishgard ones. In my opinion, it was a mistake to mix the FC and personal housing in the same wards. Personal houses suit an instanced model very well, for instance an apartment building type entrance allowing players to gradually unlock additional rooms/balconies etc.

They are the same in that both your character and housing are big investments. I hope people don't really feel like those that can't play the game due to unfortunate circumstances don't have the right to keep the houses they spent their hard earned gil on.

Good, cause the housing situation in this game blows. If you're not upset about it you probably have a house, cause it's flat terrible.
