I'd have to research the article, but a long while ago, I read that Microsoft allowed FFXI because they had hoped it would help sell systems more in Japan since a lot of people there still played the game on the PS2.

Do japanese developed games even come out on the xbox one? I heard that almost nobody played the xbox/xbox360/xboxone in Japan.
I read about it the other day. I'm sad because I had hoped really hard that it would come to Xbox One, since it's my primary gaming console (I play FFXIV on PS3). Originally, it was that Microsoft wanted the game to have servers specific for Xbox players, but now, it's "business".

And that is precisely why Elder Scrolls Online went free to play. We knew it was going to happen when we saw the "console" thing *because* of how XBL works.Phil Spencer should run for office after sidestepping two issues that prevent this from happening, and pretending like they don't exist.
1. MS doesn't allow cross platform play on anything except MS platforms...aka Windows. SE would have to segregate Playstation and Apple users to get Xbox One players.
2. Microsoft drives all subscription games through XBL requiring both an XBL sub and the actual game sub to be paid through MS, so SE would not have a diect relationship with subscribers. Cash shop items and additional services would have to go through the XBL service also.
Phil neatly avoided any of this in his minced words in the linked interview...
Funny thing though, Even the PC and Xbox players are segregated. And the console versions are crap.
It'd be nice if Microsoft would play nice with everyone else, but if they wanna be a special snowflake they can go melt in the heat alone.
Good. I don't want to play the game with Xbox users.
Right, nor is it required on games that are completely free to play such as Warframe. From what I understand it also isn't required on any game. It's a developer's choice whether or not to include it, though not including it on a payed for game likely means that a developer has to provide servers instead of using PSN itself.....
XBL on the other hand is absolutely required to play any game online on xbox consoles, regardless of what steps the developers may want to implement....
Square Enix is the only Japanese developer/publisher I know of that releases games on Xbox consoles. Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts III are both being released on it. However, I'm pretty sure it is just to account for the massive Xbox crowd in western territories more than anything else. More profit than just releasing it on one platform after all.
