I150 combat gear does not turn into Tier 5 Materia, as far as I know. That would imply that i150 crafting/gathering gear will not turn into Tier 5 Materia, either.

I have not seen any gear between i150 and i170, for crafting/gathering, have you? The current lowest known ilevel to convert to Tier 5 Materia is i160. So ... yes, expect to have to convert the i170 RCS+RGS blocked stuff for Tier 5 Materia.

Which leaves 0 slots for any secondary stats. If they include i170/180 crafted gear... I don't think we can hit the cap w/o Tier V materia... which let's face it... being available only through transmutation is a bit lame.
actually DoW/M Tier V materia are available through conversion, just that you have to convert i160 chivalric pieces to get any.

I don't know any sane person that would convert their hard-earned crafted gear though to attempt to test this theory of getting Tier 5 crafted materia. The patch notes in 3.05 gave no mention that grade 5 crafting/gathering materia is now convertable, as the 3.0 patch notes explicitly stated that they were not. Even if this were the case, it seems that it's not a 100% chance. Unfortunate things do happen, as with the case of a redditor that tried, but was only able to convert his i170 frying pan into a grade IV materia.

I was not suggesting it is currently possible.

I was saying not to expect i150 crafting/gathering gear to convert into Tier 5 Materia when they do allow us to convert gear into those materia types.

Didn't know that. Can you SB it in expert roulette? I'd imagine so. Then again, there isn't much good in Tier V DoW/M gear until they release 2-star crafted accessories.

I've seen on other threads people suggesting that it takes two runs to completely SB an HQ with 3 melds or so (perhaps SB potion as well?). I haven't tried this myself, however.

After all, the i170 pieces don't really require grade v materia to be at least on par with the i180s.
Yeah but you don't make the i170s to be on par with the version that is way easier to get. You may as well have just gotten the i180 at that point.

The main advantage of the i170 gear is actually the ability to gear your classes faster than the slower alternate i180 route. It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if they intentionally make it easy for you to match the i180s, but much more difficult to exceed them.

Most pieces can be fully melded without t5s, also keep in mind the white i150 gear fully melded is actually better in many instances than the i180. Ex gloves i150 = 8, 73, 4 versus i180 = 0, 75, 4 (craft, control, cp) with that in mind why wouldn't you craft the i170 = (9), 70 (82), 4. Otherwise just keep your i150 or meld 9 craft, 12 control.

    9 craft, 12 control melds = control 4, control 4, control 4, craft 4 and craft 1 (no T5 materia

If by most you mean 6 out of 13 items crafted items, then yes. If you are comparing them to AF only, then 4 out of 6.

Also, altho they can be melded, it will cost quite a bit to fully meld them.

As far as a full set goes, 7 pieces cant be fully melded without tier V's. Out of which the MH, chest and OH can't be fully melded even with 5x tier V.
The 4 AF items that can be fully melded aren't much of an upgrade over fully melded i150.
