Aether is all over the place. Crystals are just a concentrated form of it. Use Alexander as an example. He is sucking Aether directly from the landscape and due to that sucking the life out of the land.

Primals eat aether period. Crystals are just a preferred way to handle a substance that's otherwise intangible.
