Tolkien Sauron. Like Sauron, the Garleans want absolute order, to rule over E V E R Y B O D Y. Plus, as far as empires go, the Garleans aren't the cool kind.
I guess that all depends on what lengths empires go to to gain their supreme rule over so many nations. My guess is most of them say, "Join us or die." Hence, Garleans.

Pass, the uniforms for the rank and file suck. If we all got the fancy gun armor I'd consider it.

A number of you just want to play the badguys. Some of the people arguing seem to think that the Garleans are perfectly justified, or that we only see the worst of them. ((With the odd good soldier thrown in.))Also people keep assuming those that like the empire are trying to say they are misunderstood, they aren't. From our characters points of view they aren't and from the city states PoV they aren't. Those that dislike them are more than justified in doing so. But as mentioned numerous times some of us like playing the antagonists or just an opposing faction in general.
Some of us just want to watch the world burn...no wait. We want to watch our enemies burn while we rule the world.
People like playing the Sith or the Horde because their story is more morally complicated or because it frees them to behave more badly. Either way they likely end up with the better story overall. We haven't had many morally dubious moments in this game because we are a Hero (capital H) and that's probably how it's going to continue.

As I said previously, there's nothing shown about the Garleans that can gather any form of sympathy for me. I have more sympathy for the heretics of Isghard. I also think most people who want to play a bad guy just want to be one for the sake of doing whatever they want cause "lawl i'm evil!" I think a certain GTA5 character was made for those kinds of people. Some of us just want to watch the world burn...no wait. We want to watch our enemies burn while we rule the world.

They're not the bad guys - and anybody saying that they are needs to pay closer attention to the story. Very few - if any - individuals or organisations are painted as being black or white in terms of their morality. That goes for both Eorzeans and outsiders alike.
Just so I'm clear, I'm not advocating pro-garlean. In addition to their uniforms being sub-par for an evil empire, their leadership are far too in the mold of cackling evil stereotypes to be enjoyable. As I said previously, there's nothing shown about the Garleans that can gather any form of sympathy for me. I'd like the chance to have alternate choices in game and have them actually mean something. The chance to be even a bit more amoral would be nice with all the consequences that brings. That doesn't mean going full Trevor.
