This can't be really the reason, because expenses are really, really low, especially compared to all this gil-rewards (challenge log, adventurer in need, stuff for GC seals and sell at MB).
Plus the opportunity to buy dark matter* at even lower cost per repair and durability draughts for GC seals available.. it makes repairing quite irrelevant as a gil sink.

I think it's more 'cause in a fantasy rpg it's just common to repair your gear. ^^

*side note: The players who really make huge ammounts of gil (i.e. crafter) are the only ones who don't need to spend their money for repairs. ;D

Having repair npc in dungeon would defeat the purpose of gear breaking to some degree. But I agree, rest of the party members should be able to help, preferably, to fix the gear, to their capability.

If you say 'pls' because it's shorter than 'please', I say 'no' because it's shorter than 'yes'.

Oh I know; I run through that checklist myself. But like I said, in this particular instance, the player was brand new to the game and didn't even know about dark matter or anything. Hence why being able to help them out would be nice.

Nope, that's the real reason. NPC vendors, repair NPCs, housing, and market board fees are gil sinks in place to get gil out of the economy to minimize inflation. Repairs were WAY more expensive at 2.0 but got toned down drastically since it was a new game and 90% of the players didn't have all their crafts at 50 to repair their own stuff.
