This can't be really the reason, because expenses are really, really low, especially compared to all this gil-rewards (challenge log, adventurer in need, stuff for GC seals and sell at MB).
Plus the opportunity to buy dark matter* at even lower cost per repair and durability draughts for GC seals available.. it makes repairing quite irrelevant as a gil sink.
I think it's more 'cause in a fantasy rpg it's just common to repair your gear. ^^
*side note: The players who really make huge ammounts of gil (i.e. crafter) are the only ones who don't need to spend their money for repairs. ;D
