I feel sad about the fact that FF series never had a good official manga or anime. They should've try to hire some top tier manga-ka to make it, like Dragon Quest: Dai's Adventure.
Atelier Escha and Neptunia series also have good anime too.

Final Fantasy Unlimited had a lukewarm reception because they took a game series rated Teen and made it into a Saturday morning cartoon for 10 year olds. After The Spirits Within I don't think they're keen on doing movies any more. Though Advent Children seemed to do pretty well.
I seem to remember Final Fantasy Unlimited having pretty lukewarm reception as well? The anime industry is having a lot of problems right now so I don't think S-E is too keen on diving back into that market any time soon. But who knows.

I kinda wouldn't mind a movie/anime/manga/whatever about historical events and places mentioned in FFXIV, like the War of the Magi or some such. Especially civilisations from other Astral/Umbral eras that we don't know anything about. Like who were the big players in the Fourth Astral Era and how was the Fifth Umbral Era brought about? Or even earlier stuff, like the Third Umbral Era or Second Astral Era.

The problem I have with Spirits Within is how we didn't get an original story but basically took various FF7's plot points and repurposed them. As for .hack// and SAO they were both anime/manga's first before given game releasesSpirits Within wasn't bad, it just wasn't Final Fantasy. At best it was a decent film that could have used more polish and less trying to be part of the franchise. (please don't mention .hack// , SAO rants will follow.) . Otherwise Advent Children was a very pleasant surprise.

It took more that just VII's idea of the lifestream. It took elements from the franchise as a whole and tried to marry it all into a single narrative. That was it's biggest fault, I think. In trying to be a Final Fantasy movie it failed on understanding what made Final Fantasy... Final Fantasy.
Nope and nope.
I've played Ayesha (Escha's prequel) and I can say I were able to finish watching only because of some familiar characters.
Neptunia... Have not played -> Were unable to understand what the flock is going on -> ep.2 drop.
Spirits Within is a half decent sci-fi flick if you take out the Final Fantasy name. But if you keep it in, it's an awful adaptation on Final Fantasy. (Though most give it credit of having animation ahead of its time of release) Ah, and I heard it almost made Square go bankrupt again, or at least make them lose a large amount of money.
I don't think Square wants to go through it again. Instead, they seem to go to other mediums. FF12 and Type-0 received manga adaptions and FFXIII had a bunch of novelizations and radio dramas.
I would kill to see a FFVI anime, done well of course,

Funny how no one mentioned the two FFVII single episode OVA's Last Order and On the Way to a Smile ~ Case of Denzel, although I can understand the lack of interest in the former - it's awful.
Case of Denzel however is actually pretty good - besides giving Denzel's backstory it was also notable for actually being very faithful to the events of FFVII itself, unlike Last Order which just played out like a bad fanfic. As well, it was quite poignant in that it showed how the events of the original FFVII game affected everyone else. As it was only a bonus with the bluray edition of Advent Children though a lot of fans probably missed it.
Whether SE ever decides to do another FF tie-in anime is anyone's guess though (hopes vainly for a FFXIV-tie-in anime featuring Derplander and his party during the events of 1.0).

Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals was good

They did this with the 2.0 Collector's Edition. They released a DVD with all of 1.0's story cutscenes with Derplander as the main character and his party of iconics when the cutscene included a party. The quality isn't great, which is weird given Crystal Tools is a cutscene engine.
