So TC submitted an entry and didn't get selected? Well, you already said it's not the case.
It's a contest for hairstyle for cry out loud. It would help if you clarified what you mean by only having a biased taste of a few people.

I would have killed for simple, everyday stuff.
Not "bob no.3"
Not "more thick fringe that clips"
Not "more ridiculous accessories like ribbons and flowers that ruin my more hardcore look that that hairstyle would otherwise look good with" (seriously, several styles have 3+ accessory color options, but none *without* the accessory... Looking at you, shitty headbands)
Not more "how many braids can I weave in here"
And certainly not "anime hairstyle no.6886330".
No, it wasn't. It's a hairstyle DESIGN contest. The entire point was for someone to design a hairstyle. It was right in the information from the beginning that SE staff would pick the finalists. The amount of involvement the community has is voting on the finalists in which we can vote for whose hairstyle design left a stronger impression on us.
Maybe in the future they'll hold a contest that better fits the description the people who agree with this thread want. But, everything I've seen in this thread has come off as awful, rude, and disrespectful towards the participants who did make it in.
Which is funny because I'm seeing people say "no bashing!" which makes this whole thread very hypocritical.
You're only partially right. This was much more a contest to let us have a choice about what hair we wanted in game than it was about design. If it was just a "design contest", there would be no hair going into the game, or there would be no voting and SE would have just picked their favorite design. Hair being added into the game was the end, the design contest was just a new means.
Why would they start a "design contest", which has its purpose rooted in creativity, and then proceed to pick designs that are for the most part, similar aesthetically/similarly themed and safe?
I think you're overreacting. This thread isn't about the hairstyles themselves being bad. It's about the collection of hairstyles we get to pick from, and SE's choices of what's creative and what belongs in game not allowing the community to be fairly (or accurately) represented.
It's almost as if SE said, "Hey guys, we're doing a hairstyle design contest. Be as creative as you can! Oh, but we're only acknowledging designs we think are creative. You can pick from what we like."
So on that note, whether you see this as just a design contest (which it's not just a design contest, because the winning design from SE's picks goes into the game and voting occurs), or a community voting on what it wants to see using the design contest, as is the big picture, doing this the right way would have been nice for SE to do.
If you're going to advocate and encourage community creativity with a design contest, then allow people to vote on it reward the person who designed their favorite style, you should do it in a fair manner. Or if you do limit the voting, at least pick distinctive representatives, to accurately represent the broad tastes of the community.
This was not a fair manner and does not truly reward creativity (as in SE exclusively chose styles that follow the typical pattern, and hairstyles far out of the norm but extremely creative never had a chance at winning) and is not a truly fair voting (because we're limited to SE's choices).

Are the hairstyles the same? Or is that just your opinion because they don't look the same to me at all. The concepts are similar to what's in the game such as ponytails, short hair, and pigtails but they're executed differently imo. So that's entirely subjective and, again, only your opinion.
That said, I'm going drop my hat here and not comment to this thread anymore. I don't feel like debating in a thread this toxic and salty. Especially since in your comment alone you kind of prove my point rather than disprove it.
Are they exactly the same? No. Do any of them provide anything very unique or different to the game? No. It's more of the same style. Cutesy, anime, or elegant. What's already in the game, as you just stated yourself. Slightly different plays on the same stuff as always.
A glance at the thread with styles that didn't make it into the finals should show you that the choices we have from SE's collection are extremely limited and have much in common with each other by comparison.
The hairstyles themselves are nice, but the collection we get to choose from is extremely limited and follows the typical pattern.
Toxic and salty are also overused words on these forums. If you think my comment was hostile....I don't really know what to say. I guess I should apologize for disagreeing with you, because that's literally all I did.

Am I the only one annoyed that I can't vote for my fav female hair style because it is male hair 1?
Personally, I would've liked it more if there could've been like 50 male and 50 female entries in the finals, and that the top 3 from each would get in game. But, I know that the devs only have so much/little time to make the winning styles (by 3.1 is it?). Anyways, maybe next time the hairstyle contest comes around -- and I really hope there will be a next time (cuz I really love the idea of community involvement in helping to make this game a better place for all us players) -- they will allow themselves more time to have more hairstyles make it into the game
I entered this contest as both a fun little diversion, and a bit of a selfish wish to get a particular hairstyle for my character. I knew it was a long shot, and I didn't expect anything of it.
In game, I'm a fiery, pissed-off looking fighter girl. That is my roleplay, and I designed a fiery hairstyle to match. But IRL, I'm chill af ...or at least I like to think so. So, I don't expect anything, and I roll with the punches, and I keep on keeping on, and now I be liek...
Yuppers... I tell ya tho ... switching to a no stress diet...
