After seeing a lot of the posted hairstyles that didn't make it, makes you think some of the finalists were picked for their simplicity.
Like My god this one is great, but it lost to participant number 9 (Quistis-hair)?

Male one: background again
Female one: I think it's too long rule wise
Dont you know that background? its from the character creation screen all right? SE disqualifying people from using SE background? hmm. if it iso, thats wrong you know ...
What about the rip offs in the finalist section huh? GG SE
Have a nice day
I don't think the problem is the background or length (there's longer hair than that already in the game, I'm using it right now). I think it's the use of dead straight models. The model Square provided was at an angle, with the two models giving a general '3d' view of the entire hairstyle. Now, yes, there are finalists that only give one view, but there's no telling how many more pictures they submitted with multiple angles. That one female Au Ra sitting on the bed being a prime example (can barely see the style in the picture posted).
The Quistus hairstyle that people keep going on about as a rip-off isn't even one. It's very similar but it's not the same. Quistis's hair is pinned in the back with a hairclip while the actual style has a ponytail. That and unless they submitted art from someone else of Quistis then it's not against the rules. The contest said original but unless you can prove the person was intentionally ripping-off quistis and it wasn't an accident (because that can happen y'know there is only so much that can be done with hair) then you nor anyone has any grounds to stand on in calling it a rip-off.
Edit: People are so quick to jump and claim a design is being ripped-off over a lot of vague similarities. Though, of course, only on the finalists entries. No one went through the losers and did the same.

That's my guess, I don't know if that was the reason or not. It's a background. So when would you count something as a background? When not?
Also, in backgrounds you could also accidentally have something in there that the contest organizers didn't notice. And they already had enough to do just figuring out who stole images and who ripped off stuff.
Rip offs were taken out, as you can see that they removed no 12 in the female section.
If you can prove that the other things are rip offs (aka not only used as a reference but being too similar or even being traced), SE will probably remove those too. But you have to prove it.
Edit: Well, maybe it's not the background then.
But the "too long" is a rule for this competition. Doesn't matter if there are long hairs ingame already.
And if you look at the template, the hair would be outside of the picture. The Hairstyle hair length must be above the chest level (see templates below). Hairstyles that do not meet this requirement will not be accepted.
Personally, I would have loved to see very long hairBut rules are rules.
