Simple:
Boss fight -> Having a look to the aggro bar of the group. The more Aggro you have as more DMG you are doing. And I am talking with the use of our 80% Aggro transfer skill every 90 secs....
If you be constantly on place 3 or 4 it is ok to think you deal enough dmg for the group ;D

A good warrior will not do more damage than a good ninja. However, they do come disturbingly close given they're a "tank".
mnk can be top dps without getting close to ripping aggro. its all about burst damage. thats why blm and old prenerf ninja always rip aggro like crazySimple:

Not to mention some classes can aggro dump like DRG Elusive Jump or a class like SMN that has a pet, etc. There are many reasons why aggro meter is not an accurate way to gauge DPS.
You'll likely see an improvement. It may or may not be enough to make you feel comfortable with the job. From what I've heard, ping in Japan is very good, so they don't experience these issues so much over there. I play in Canada and I'm fairly close to the servers, and I still find the timing too inconsistent to really enjoy. If I really want to play a faster DPS I'll stick with monk.
