It certainly would allow for something to work towards and strive for, as well as add some class / job distinctness (instead of having Monk, Warrior, Thief all wear the same armor, or, say, Bard, White Mage and Black Mage all wear the same armor - No Thanks).

I'm fine with having some General (Non-Class Specific Gear), for those that want some versatility (saving inventory space, etc.), but there's something special about seeing a classic Final Fantasy Black Mage, or a Dragoon, or a Dancer, etc.

    Thanks.
Then they should just implement gear for typical FF classes which bear bonuses to specific kinds of magic/attacks or something but without the "required class" clause added in there.

That way there is a strong suggestion to wear those types of gear while performing a certain role, but without flat-out imposing a restriction on players.

That doesn't work. It's already in the game right now. There are plenty of players who use Non-Optimal Class, Non-Optimal Rank Gear on a completely off class. It's their prerogative, but it's what's also leading to the bland, homogenized visual look and feel in XIV so far.
