Having both options is great. Let's face it, Anima runs out. Quickly. And adding airships that didn't have a fast travel option would have done nothing to alleviate this (contrary to popular belief) because instead of going "Well I'll just take the long airship ride, at least it's immersive yay", it'd be "Screw that airship, it takes 10 minutes to get to town. I'm gonna ask for a teleport and pay somebody to get there".

The only way adding airship travel was going to stop people from using Anima is if it offered the same speed of travel. Which is instant. Airships don't make Anima useless (as you have way less options for destination on airship travel than you do with Anima), but it does make it manageable, which was the point. But that isn't what most people complaining wanted, unfortunately. They wanted something more like "Yay we got our immersion, and you can't have convenience! Unless you have Anima that runs out with no way to restore it other than time, of course. Oh, you don't? You have to take a long time to go somewhere, we're forcing our immersion down your throat! We win, you lose!".

Now, people trying to go from say, Gridania to Limsa quickly will go, "instead of using my Anima I can pay some Gil and take the airship over to the Limsa, and get there quickly so I can do what I need to do there". And for the people who want the immersion, it's still there. It's not magically going away because other people might need to get there fast and use the instant option. And they'll probably add features that will make people want to use the long version when they have time.

Ultimately, in this case choice doesn't make it a gamebreaker. It just makes everyone happy. Well, it doesn't make the people who want to force everyone to do it their way or the highway happy.

Of course it's not a game breaker. But it's a huge let down for setting for Eorzea. It's a huge let down to the time and resources the dev team will devote to creating the experience of riding the airship, when most likely a large portion of the community will opt for the fast travel option over the actual ride.

They already have a fast travel option, it's called Anima.

My basic feeling is by creating alternatives to singular modes of travel (airship ride vs air ship fast travel) it creates more and more fractures in the player community. Ultimately reinforcing the single player MMO mentality.

There was something special in he early days of FFXI riding the ferry with other players and facing down pirate attacks or NM spawns. I just imagined that FFXIV would be similar instead of implementing a paid warp.

As you read above, Anima being the "fast travel option" eventually runs out. And there's no way to recover Anima other than wait for it to be restored. And because the people using Anima are using to get somewhere quickly, having a long "immersive" airship ride isn't going to make them stop using Anima. Therefore, when the people run out of Anima they would have no choice other than to be forced into the "immersion" other people want.

From what I've read, it is basically a "We want immersion and we want to force anyone who doesn't to want it too" mentality from the people arguing against choice. How other people choose to play shouldn't be your issue, folks. Not wanting to be "immersed in the game world" doesn't make them worse players like say, not learning a class/job or something. Therefore, it shouldn't affect you and your friends, who likely will choose immersion.

Unless part of it is getting one over on the people from the other camp in some kind of sick "we're right and you're wrong" game. Which if it is, get over it.
