So, yes, its very different in the West, and while change is being made, it's slow in coming.
Also, it's very often a problem on the English-speaking internet (not sure about other languages), likely due to the prevalence of English-speaking countries where this is a problem. In the US, until two years ago, the federal government refused to honor any legally obtained state-given marriage licenses for same-sex couples, and same-sex marriage only became legal in all states less than two months ago. Also, in many states, same-sex couples could not adopt children until two months ago (they got around the anti-discrimination laws by passing laws to prevent all unmarried people from adopting children). My wife and I were married in FFXIV at a time when our own government refused to acknowledge same-sex marriages. And it's not just the US - Australia, for instance, has a anti-LGBT prime minister who just last week shot down a vote on legalizing same-sex marriage in that country. And, compared to other situations, the internet tends to be more full of vitriol too because of relative anonymity (though also more safe for LGBT individuals from physical harm for the same reasons, though "doxing" does happen).

Of course, this forum is moderated and relatively less anonymous since you have to tie what you say to an in-game account. The few anti-LGBT posts I've seen on this forum have never lasted long before being deleted in their entirety for violating the forum's terms of use.

So, while it's wonderful that Sweden is more accepting than other parts of the world, Sweden is more accepting than other parts of the world.

Just wanted to say that, for future reference, you can edit your post so that you don't have to make numerous posts back to back. That way you can make all of the bullet points and information available in one neat post.

Part of it is begging for acceptance. Part of it is begging for attention.

The truth is most people don't care either way. The minorities on both sides that do care will never get along, and stuff like this just irks me. Because, it's like...nobody should care, and those who do are idiots, and they're never going to be convinced to accept it so why bother with them?

And this is me speaking as a pansexual queer male. The whole PRIDE thing just bothers me. The bigots should be ignored, and the PRIDE movement is just trolling them, and rallying them to fight back against this phantom "agenda" they think exists.

America is the land of self entitlement. No one really cares about same sex anything. But when you come out boasting about how proud you are to be of that type, it makes people question your motives.

I mean seriously, how often do you hear someone boasting that they were able to get married? Never people may talk about their relationship, troubles, etc but they typically don't brag about something like being able to get married.

Pretty much this post is about one guys ability to publicly say "Im gay and proud" Meanwhile the rest of us ( gay or not ) do not feel the need to glorify our lives to the internet.

Wow, the privileged individuals on this thread...

EDIT: Also, for those who were unaware, "Pride" in America is the LGBT equivalent of Black History Month or Veteren's Day. It's done on the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots that started the modern LGBT movement in America and it commemorates that civil rights movement. Pride parades grew out of those riots - except without the violence and police brutality.

Pride isn't only about the current state of LGBT rights - there's some of that, but, in America, it's mostly about commemorating American LGBT history.

Hating Pride in America and thinking we should abolish it because Americans now have legalized same-sex marriage (that means we're post-homophobia/transphobia, right?) is like hating Black History Month and thinking we should abolish it because we have a black president (that means we're post-racist, right?).

Thank you. I was about to post something like this as well... I have nothing against homosexuals, but the whole attention seeking thing bothers me, and has always bothered me. I live in Texas, which is supposed to be one of the least "accepting" states, and no one gives a damn whether you are gay or not. People need to stop shoving their sex life in others faces, it's getting pretty damn ridiculous when I have to see this crap on the FFXIV forums.

    Kelg,

I couldn't agree more. I am happy ( gay or striaght ) when someone is able to find a life long partner, that what it is all about. But bragging about being gay and married is about like bragging about being straight and married, who gives a hoot, expect people who crave attention.

Yeah! Let's stop shoving sexuality in people's faces, no more straight romances in media at all, I'm sooo sick of straight folks shoving their stuff down my throat. Also screw people being prideful about anything ever. Celebration parties? Screw 'em! Sports games? Screw 'em! Any parade ever for anyone? Screw 'em! Fourth of July? Jeez guys, stop craving attention and launching all those annoying fireworks, no one gives a damn about something that occured over 200 years ago.

Progress for the LGBT community is far from over, and pride events like this are very important to the overall well being for a lot of us (See Nyalia's comments regarding the history of Pride parades).

Also as a side note and personal pet peeve, don't write off your non-US country as being perfect regarding LGBT rights, I'm sure they've got loads of issues as well, pay attention towards minority groups and their complaints in your country and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Good on the OP for organizing such a nice event on your server, I'm sure lots of people appreciated it. Despite a lot of complaints I've got towards this game regarding some of the various LGBT stuff, I've gotta appreciate this game for allowing the whole same-sex wedding ceremonies at least.

Romance being depicted in media is not the same as shoving sexuality in people's face. Do you see anyone complaining that there are homosexual NPCs in this game? No. Most people don't care. There is a difference between showing two characters in love, and and a bunch of nut jobs saying: "I R STRAIGHT!". Oh, and when was the last time you saw a straight pride parade? Oh yeah, never, because that would be stupid. A gay pride parade is no different, and just as stupid. Parades in general are fine, but these are parades basically saying "HEY, I PREFER TO HAVE SEX WITH PEOPLE WHO SHARE MY GENDER, DEAL WITH IT!", I find them quite tasteless. What does anyone really get out of it? This is honestly just trolling in the purest form. Do people really want to be defined by their sexual orientation alone, and not because they are an interesting person..? And now for the real question: Why do people have to bring these kind of things into an online game? Seriously, what is the point? This stuff doesn't belong here, FFXIV isn't some kind of political/gay rights battleground. What's next, "abortion is murder: lalafell edition" topic? Give me a break.
