Why on earth would you of all people not want to use them? They sound right up your alley.
    They are unwieldy.

Why should I have to materialise knowledge of every type of macro command from nowhere and then get a degree in programming just to swap out my gear/customise a target mode etc?

It's unwieldy, is all im trying to say, and I simply don't care for macros at all and want nothing to do with them.

I got my PhD in Macro Biology, maybe I can help you out. Start with something easy, like:
/equip Head "Name of your hat"

    Congratulations! You equipped a hat!

On a serious note, I think macros would be MUCH more helpful if everything in the UI didn't take so long to do. Setting up one macro to equip my Gladiator gear takes a good 15 seconds...then I have 3 macros to equip each different line of abilities. It takes me a good minute to fully get prepared for my main job, and then I can't use any of the abilities, because of the stupid timer reset EVERY SINGLE TIME you set a skill that wasn't active before.

Because it's really not that hard at all?
Here, this should make it easy for you:

You don't need a degree in programming to do that.

I also hate macros on the principle that I should not have to input computer code in order to make a game run smoother. That is the job of the game programers and developers.

If I can play 7+ jobs/classes on one character, then I should have 7+ equipment set screens to easily toggle through.

As for targeting, if there is a macro that works great then that macro should be hard-coded into the game by the developers...not by me.

It's the principle of lazy programming that bothers me. "Allow the players to choose their playstyle" often seems like an excuse rather than a feature.

They aren't computer codes, they are simple chat commandos.
    /action "Cure III" <p1>
Cast Cure III on Partymember 1
You can use them with the macro slots or write it in the chat

But for only targeting, you don't need a macro.
Just look a little in the keyboard configuration menu. There are some useful target options waiting for a key bind
