/HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN TO MEWhy does my character do these things? Raid, grind, etc? What is he striving toward? What is his purpose?
After looking at the various grind-threads all up in this forum, you have to wonder, is there more to life than just the grind?
Is life a grind and then you die? Or is there something more out there, beyond the great blue yonder for which we are meant to strive?
We are Walkers of the Path, but what even is our path? Just to grind our days away? Do we follow this path blindly without even knowing where it is taking us?
Maybe if my character could create his own, private, Player-run Company, and build a house, or a ship, maybe then he could look back and say he has lived a full life. Maybe if there was PvP, why perhaps then he could feel accomplisment from taking on foes with similar intelligence. And maybe, just maybe, if there was the freedom to play as he wanted, freedom to play as whatever role he wanted (see armory system), then he could perhaps find solace in that too.
But alas! Woebetide him, for as he can do none of these things, and with no promise of such things in the future either, he shall be forever lost for meaning and purpose.
Indeed, his prospects are looking very grim.
Tell us, why, given life, are we meant to die? (Help us in our cryyy!)

XIV and its community is in such a bad state that questioning the games state is instant troll badge around here. People troll other people who they think are trolling, then throwing hypocrytical posts "Why do you post OP?" why do you post to the OP if you dont like him, same fking reason he posts about the game.
Its Lafabel really.
As for OP
Grind, seems to be a routine to progress. All MMO players have it stuck into their head that their grinding means something. It does not, you're slapping the same monster you were 1 hour ago, you've gained some extra numbers, you're not pro now because the monster does the exact same thing and you do the exact same thing.
If I flicked a lightswitch on and off 5000 times an hour, does that mean im better in light flicking skill because i grinded that switch?
Grinding, previously was ment to be there for the purpose of extending players time, but a lot are tired of it, especially when theres no final result to it.
You grind in checkout job, doing it over and over doesnt mean much unless there was some goal such as promotion. XIV needs a promotion other than "You gain another skill that you probably wont use", though thats different depending on the job, in my head right now I have Flare/Flood, etc in mind.
Right now, the player, has no goal. He is to just "Live" in a "Working" world, where there is nothing higher than the number 50. And that doesnt mean increasing cap fixes things for those confused, it means currently in XIV the only time consuming goal and real progressing achievement is hitting that first Rank 50, then some enjoy it and hit their X rank 50.
Even such things as building a house will not pull in a meaning for the player because then what is the meaning of the house? Invite friends over and talk? Does this activity provide your character more life and purpose of striving through levels or other such content in order to achieve something they can already do but in a different environment.
You could look back at crafting up a Dodore +3 or w/e +3 and think "I have forfilled my life", so could the question be:
What is your purpose?
Don't get used to it :P but I do agree with you.XIV and its community is in such a bad state that questioning the games state is instant troll badge around here. Why Build something if it has no purpose. Like you said you can build a house and yes its a lot of work involved but what is the end result? What plans are you doing with the house?
So yes I agree with this 100%
People are supposed to set their own goals. Do you really need a game that tells you what you want to do?
@OP/gifthorse
Well, how's about grinding some gear? Woooohoooo!
Really.. if you're not in it for some sort of RPing or exploring there's really no fun to be had in the game anymore. It'll get there eventually.. I think. It's too bad that most of the stuff Tanaka wanted to add that you listed will never be added to the game. Maybe Yoshi-P will put in Tanaka's ideas after the first expansion, if the game is still running at that point.
Same here.. whatever happened to kilta?
You mean the person who said she/he talk on the PS3 and that the reason she have to make x2 post to say something, And she/he can't play a lot due to her mom/brother not allowing she/he brother Laptop? If her i bet she can't log into the forums without getting on first FFXIV lol then waiting 24hours.@OP/gifthorse

Sorry, but that's some really poor quality defence of a total lack of things to do in game.
Yes, games should provide you with a range of activities being as making your own up doesn't work within the boundaries of an MMO.
This is a justified (although totally useless, what does it achieve? The dev team are all too familiar with this) post, just melodramatic as always Gift - THE WORLD IS ENDING, THINGS AREN'T GOING MY WAY etc.
Chocolate, cigarettes, beer, caffeine, women - oh, and friends!
