A kill is always worth 5 points, and realistically at least 10.

I agree, but the quoted part isn't entirely true.

I'm fairly certain that killing enemies w/ some rank of battle fever gives a point bonus, much like slaughter. I often see kill-based score changes in the end-game results window that are not multiples of 5, and this is the most reasonable explanation I could find for it.

I agree with absolutely everything you said, though. Just that kills are always worth at least 5 points.
