I've heard it speculated that the original release date for FFXIV (September 30, 2010) was chosen specifically in order to compete with the latest World of Warcraft expansion at the time (Cataclysm, released on December 7, 2010).

We all saw how well that turned out.

There's no need for FFXIV to try to compete directly with WoW, and it's probably a mistake to even try. WoW is an old game, and Blizzard can't keep shoring it up forever. Eventually they will retire the game; it's had a good run, it made Blizzard a ludicrous amount of money, and I doubt anyone will regard it as a failure once it eventually shuts down. Perhaps Blizzard will start plotting out a new MMO to follow; Universe of Starcraft, perhaps?

Blizzard lost 50% of it's subscriber base (myself included) in 6 months. Trust me when I say they don't need any help failing at this point.

When WoD hit, subs were up to 10 million again, I believe they are at 7 million now. that's not 50%. They also sold 3.3 million WoD copies in their first 24 hours while FFXIV only sold 630k copies in their first week. I do not like WoW it's ugly and it's boring, and it's BORING, did I mention that it's boring? But what is with all this hatred? Lol it's just a crappy (IMO only) mmo, it's a bunch of other boring crappy mmos out there.

Edit: I stand corrected they are at 5 million subs now. Which is still WAAAYYYY more than here.

I hope WoW starts losing to FFXIV ... but then gains some back. Give SE a taste at the top then let them fight it out to bring out the best product they can. Maybe with some actual competition they'll stop giving us quick'n'easy recycled cheap thrills like WoW, or tired "server space"/PS3 limitation excuses like FFXIV.
