As someone who mains healer in general, AST is honestly fine as is. The issue is that it's not an "entry level" healing class. You can't expect it to heal like WHM OR SCH because it is neither, and it isn't even close. The lowered potency does not have as big of an impact and you have plenty of options to over come the lower potency in either sect.
The goal for playing AST is to use ALL your toolkit, from disable to lightspeed, to using cards properly (try stacking the deck in the beginning of combat by getting a card in reserve that's buffed and spread it so you can keep ahold of it). I've rarely had mp issues after I figured how how to handle things and the combos for instant cast heal tanks faster than anything but benediction. I have not been "held back" by anything other than foolish missconceptions on what the class is capable of and people who aren't willing to take a chance on someone that knows what they are doing.

If you try to fail and succeed, which have you done?

It's not though. Level the other two classes to 60, and you'll notice a significant difference in performance. Healing on my whm is the same effectiveness, but different than healing on my sch. While ast is flat out less effective than both.

I see this argument a lot around here (especially from a certain ast white knight who shall remain nameless), but ast isn't some majorly difficult class whose secrets have only been unlocked by a select few who've mastered it. Most of us here know exactly how it's supposed to be played. The problem is when you compare the classes side by side, there is nothing ast can do that whm/sch can't do better. And that's not opinion either, but an objective fact backed by math and loads of evidence.

With that said, you can certainly clear content as ast. It's just much more difficult than it is with the other two healers, which shouldn't be the case in a game like this. There will always be classes that can perform better than others, but the idea is to get them as close to balanced as you can, and ideally give them all a niche that would give certain classes the edge in certain fights. Atm ast doesn't even have that.
