Blizzard also has a really bad track record of putting the exact same stupid bullshit in their holiday events.I honestly prefer it this way, you have an option to either be there or pay a tiny $5 for it later on. You could say that all these small $5 purchases add up, but are you going to buy every single ugly egg hat, or random earring? No, you likely won't. I prefer this over the Blizzard route of adding exclusive things to the cash shop that were never available in game. Buying them for gil would be preferred, but if it's this or exclusive cash shop items, I pick this.
Very rarely updating them.
It's not a "me too" thing. Celebrating holidays with fun outfits is an "everyone too" thing. Imagine going to a Halloween party, and everyone is wearing the same outfit, because that is the only one available that year.
And since the items ARE still available, it sucks to tell newer players that if they want an item they have to spend $5 on it. Wearing cool event items is basically advertising a stupidly priced mogstation. (Although that won't make me take off my ghost costume.)
Hehe, I remember when they blew up the park in Stormwind during Cataclysm. That Christmas, Santa Claus's quest marker was at ground zero, and it took a week for them to notice it and patch Santa back to life. Not to mention that we received 2008 Commemorative beer steins three years in a row during Brewfest, and also received 8th Year WoW Anniversary rewards two years in a row.
But the anger at FFXIV is that they deliberately started Realm Reborn with having both new and old content for their events. New quests with new rewards, and old vendors with old rewards. Then, in their clumsy attempt to launch a paid item store, they stripped out the vendors and added the items as $3 and $5 paid services.
There were also people upset that the holiday events after mogstation launched seemed weaker than the previous year. Each holiday had multiple items in the promotional art that were not actual reward items (halloween striped leggings, christmas fur lined gloves, various minions). Also, a majority of the new rewards were housing items, which was salt in a wound for people who have been begging for more housing wards on crowded servers.
Interestingly, the behemoth heir from the 2014 Christmas promotional art is now in the game as a reward for the Ishgard hunts seals. That pretty much proves that the art was planning for event items that weren't ready yet. But they were ready to accept your credit card numbers for those old event items.

It stings even more when you were around to get them back then, but you just have a new character who suddenly doesn't have access to any of that stuff. If they made event items account-bound, that would be one thing, but...It's not a "me too" thing. Celebrating holidays with fun outfits is an "everyone too" thing. Boggles my mind that people just let SE slide on this crap. I wish I had an e-mail or address or something where I could write them a letter to express my displeasure.
Having more than 1 character is an option, but not the philosophy of this game.It stings even more when you were around to get them back then, but you just have a new character who suddenly doesn't have access to any of that stuff. I rerolled on a new server. You are completely ignorant of MMO players if you think most people only ever play one character forever.
im happy they released the yukata in mog station, but where is the matching lord's clogs?....i don't mind if they add 3 more dollar for the clogs...but how come only release part of the set? really disappointing on that aspect...
How I see it only the Yukatas from 2014 are in the mog shop. And the clogs were part of the 2012 set. Also no swimsuit from 2011 or 2013. Only what was new in summer event 2014 + dance emote.
And for this we have Fantasia, name change and server transfer. And we don't need new characters for multiple jobs.
extra characters are only used to bypass weekly lockouts (even if the gears from it is character bounded) or as mules because of extra retainers for free (require friends or a FC safe)

You snooze, you lose. If you were not sub'd during the event, or did not bother with it, you can't get it. Complaining about that and demanding things be made available is a problem This is because when old event items are made available the following year for in-game curreny, it destorts the value of participating in the original event by devaluing the rewards from that event. Adding such items to the cash show for a non trivial amount ensures that they will only be obtained by players who really want them, and thus the rarity of the reward is maintained, as is the value of participating in seasonal events.
I think putting these things in the cash shop is a good compromise since it preserves the 'value' of the items in-game by not making the items trivial to get, and yet it still allows new players to get some of the more exclusive items from years gone by. The net result is income for SE through FFXIV which helps pay for things such as server upgrades, new data centers and future developement. How is this a problem for anyone?
Fundamentally, if you snooze, you lose.
I agree with this, but I have a smallamount of sympathy for new players as well, so placing a selection of easonal reward items in the cash shop for non trivial prices seems like a good compromise. Clearly the price is right since it is high enough to cause many compalints, but not high enough to prevent those truly interested inan item from purchasing. It's almost a win-win for players who participate in the events becuase the rarity is mostly preserved and SE has additional income to supplement the subscription revenue and finance future expansion/development.

"And for this we have the option of you spending even more money and losing a character you may still wish to play!"
Wow, what an excellent option. I'm amazed I didn't chose to take it!
