Like many other said already, people have different standards by which the give out commendations.
Personally, I don't commend healers just for healing and dpsing because i expect them to do that anyway if they have the leeway (which you obviously had, since everything went smooth).
I commend healers when they save us from a dangerous situation or get us through anything that would have normally killed the group with just an average healer.
If no such situation pops up because everyone else isn't messing up either, bad luck, but you just didn't get a chance to shine, sorry.

Also, quite often, people don't bother giving out commendations at all and just leave the content instantly after loot is distributed. It sucks, especially if you went out of your way to maximize your own performance, but in the end, you'll just have to deal with it.

I think most just don't care. I do find if I am a bit more chatty, usually after a few brews. People commend more. I'll get all 3 comms (light party) if I talk it up a bit, throw some humor out there. Make a joke about the way the run is going, or something seen in the dungeon. If I die I always point the finger at myself, make a joke about it or something. Just try to have fun and get those around me into it, and it always goes well. To expect comms, well thats a whole different thing, never expect them no matter what you do.

Since I main tank my way through the duty finder, I almost always commend the healer; mainly as a thank you for keeping my ass alive. The only 2 conditions that nullify that are if the healer fell asleep at the wheel or if a DPS really stood out in a leadership role helping a new player.

If I see a song played appropriately, bard gets my comm. No questions.

When I heal, I don't expect them. They usually go to the tank is my assumption, and I go from there.

I randomly comm people 95% of the time. Do you really think it matters if you do or do not get comms? Do you feel angry because you didn't get a gold star, even when you went above and beyond? Well, boo hoo. Comms mean absolutely nothing.

I've explained entire fights and carried people multiple times and I have gotten none plenty, so as far as I can tell that says enough to me to know they're meaningless.

When I really pull my weight and the stars align and I do some amazing things and get no comms, and then when I make a fart joke and get all the comms, you know what that makes me do? Well, it makes me think of more fart jokes.

A run has to go entirely poorly for me not to commend someone... like the Tank not-using-any-enmity-skills, thus "I" was doing the tanking.

I don't really care a whole lot about the comms unless I'm going into the df along with someone and then only because it's a bit of a competition. Other than that I always give my comm to the healer first unless they mess up, then the tank, then the dps. The reasoning for this is pretty simple to me, a healer that keeps people alive is more important than a tank maintaining enmity on all mobs and moving out of all the crap because let's face it, tanks can stand in pretty much everything and it'll still be healable. The reasoning for putting dps last is also pretty simple, in a vast majority of cases how good or bad the dps is is irrelevant to the success of the run if the tank/healer are able to do their thing, all the dps affects is the speed of the run.

This is for the 4-player stuff, if that wasn't obvious.
I think a lot of people just don't bother with comms at all though and as others have said, a positive attitude or jokes is usually rewarded more than anything else.

I usually Com the first person to say "Hi", unless someone does something amazing.

People have all kinds of reasons to give them

Wierd. Usually I get comms when I heal and DPS. (Obviously that when I do it, I have to use some benediction on the tank, some emergency maneuvers, some miracle savings...) Probably that's what people commend for.

Also there's one thing that I'm not sure. Healers usually commend Tanks and Tanks usually commend healers. I don't know if the DPS tend to commend each other or what. Maybe they're waiting for the DF for so long that all they want is just to get out of the dungeon to start another queue. Tanks that speedrun things also leave the dungeon without roll on the last loot ans without giving commends either. It's kinda dumb IMO, because everyone wants the parade chocobo, anyway. Why not help someone who deserve it?

Despite all the theories, the best day to get commends is on Tuesday, as people do it for the challenge log.

Edit: Oh, there's two conditions for not commending the Tank in my case: one is for not popping cooldowns or hold aggro and the other is if a DPS stood out in mechanics or helped new players.
