OP the reason everyone says get Provoke is because it will put you at the top of the enmity list immediately, even if you're somehow number 3 or 4. But you have to, I mean have to follow it up with an attack that generates enmity ASAP, or you will lose aggro again quickly. It really isn't 'optional'.

How do warrior and dark knight compare? I don't know much about either and the only thing putting me off warrior is that 1-30 fates seem dead now so it would be a pain to level!

Very different playstyles. Other than that, DRK is very similar to PLD in terms of mitigation (mitigation options, that is) but magic focused, WAR has a stacking resource called wrath/abandon that is used for both their mitigation and damage burst.

DRK is all about managing your mana and using a plethora of oGCD abilities. WAR is all about big burst and timing your inner beast for mitigation/healing.

WAR brings a universal damage down (ridiculously good), and slashing debuff (ridiculously good), DRK brings int down, and if MT can bring a damage down (good, but basically DRK is just as much a MT as a PLD).

Damn thats a shame, everything to do with warrior makes me want to play it apart from what the class actually is! I like looks and story etc and the dark knight armor and the idea of it and the story thus far seems really good. I dont really know anything about the warrior or its story or armors, might have to a look at it later on.

    Cheers

It's actually more time efficient to run dungeons until about level 45 or so. At least, I always found it so. I've tried levelling in parallel with another FC member, and I dungeon'd while they FATE'd, and I levelled much faster, even without the daily bonuses. Probably about 20% at a ballpark?
It's also good practice, especially for tanks and healers. Just the first few levels until you can run Satasha sucks, though the very first few you can just whip through beating on the noob gardens.

I prefer warrior over paladin and now I think I like dark knight over warrior. It feels like dark knight combines what I do like about paladin with what I like about warrior to make an interesting playstyle. I have been leveling up multiple jobs so I've only got dark knight to 40 but I have done most of it through dungeons. Leveling roulette every day usually gets me a level and a half, and then I've run the highest level dungeon available for extra XP. The good thing about leveling DRK right now is that people are going in with low expectations when they see DRK so if you mess up a bit they seem to be a little more forgiving.

Another good example is that if you die, you will never catch up in threat to another tank.
So If you need to pull the boss off the other tank, before 5 stacks of X kills them, you HAVE to use provoke. It's 100% impossible to ever catch up, the GCD will always keep you behind them by 2-5mins worth of attacks.

Provoke is taunt. If you don't have it. You aren't a real tank. No need for stories or situational of using it. Taunt is required. Period.

Skull Sunder generates threat and does dmg, PLD MUST have it.

The reason we give situational examples, is to show WHY it's important.

There's a LOT of bad advice given, and being told to "just listen, because I said so" can lead to someone who plays incorrectly, because they picked the wrong person to blindly follow.
