I know it can be a little confusing as to what you role is. I started with my first class as arcanaist because I wanted to get to scholar cus i like to heal. So i got into a few dungeons and people were getting annoyed at me for using physick on the other party members. It didn't really click until then that before you turn into a scholar, you are meant to be a DPS.

I almost fell into the trap of being a Marauder when I first started FFXIV, but the AF hat from Archer convinced me otherwise.

When me and My fiancee started 1 year ago we realised at lvl 30 or something that he was tank and me dps, i started attacking first all the time and his warrior attacked 1 enemy at the time. First mmo ever, we got votekicked, yelled at and when someone finally told us how the Roles work we felt so ashamed XD learning by wiping right? so i agree, not everyone is interested in class-storyline so set more info at the start when u begin(or make an selectable intromovie that explains dungeons basics easier!)

Or you know, Yoshi and SE could of just done it like in FFXI and let the players figure it out for themselves what class does what and not...;d;..

....sorry I'll go crawl back to that other game..:X

    But as this individual said,

The same could be said about Archer/Bard. When starting a new character the option is Archer, not Bard so you don't start out as a "Support" as many people like to call it. You start out as dos but still have to deal with lower damage even if you aren't "Support" yet. Very misleading going into any class thinking it is one thing from text and such and finding out it is something entirely different.

It just depends on what talents you pick later on.
I came from WoW and when I was doing research about what class to roll in FFXIV I read about job crystals. I assumed that there would be job crystals that could be used to play different roles. To this day I'm confused as to why each class only has one job crystal to go with it. Why can't GLA transition into a tank OR a DPS? Why can't Lancers and monks become tanks?
Why can't archers become DPS if they don't want to be a support class? It seems like SE is missing a golden opportunity here to use job crystals to create a more diverse set of classes that people can explore. This would also be a great way to give people reasons to go back to low level zones/dungeons and help to give more pre-endgame content to have fun with.
But back to the topic at hand - I agree that it should be made more clear that if you roll Gladiator or Marauder (neither of which even SOUND like tank classes) you will be a tank, or make all tank/healer classes like Arcanist where you can branch out.

I can't deny that I was confused at first as well: I saw the gladiator with a shield and I was pretty much knowing that they were tanks. Because most tanks have shields.

However I looked at the warrior and I didn't know what to expect: in most games I played (yes, even the infamous WoW) Warriors can use big swords and weapons but in here, they were only able to use axes. In another game (TERA) warriors are actually rogues and even then they can tank, but in this game I wasn't 100% sure. The main reason why I went warrior in the end was because one of my favourite characters of all time uses an axe (my profile name is an hint) and when I found out that warriors are tanks It was the choice for me.

Still I agree with Unglitteringgold: I wish some classes could have dual roles, because Warriors ESPECIALLY NOW, can become great dps. Not only that but Monks have capabilities of becoming great evasion tanks: just improve Fists of Earth to give even more damage reduction and allow your skills to have aggro and you're already set: featherfoot is already strong as a monk (20%) and mantra is as good as Convalescence, but it can be applied on all of your party, and with few more cross class abilities (Keen flurry anyone?) they can become great tanks.

There is a lot of potential but I highly doubt we'll see anything in the close future.

wont every happen again for the trouble they went through that cuz to fix 1 job they might create a prob for the other job.
dont get me wrong it would be nice to have multible job crystals for a job so i could be dps gladi or whatever but wont happen

Because it's really hard to add "Role: Tank/healer/damage" and "Advancement - Job: <job>" to the class description at character creation.

You people say folks are lazy. Many new players "do" read the description and none of them are explicit about what each class does. If I wanted to play a raging marauder that runs around with a 2h weapon mashing faces in, I'd pick that... Oh wait, I'm supposed to protect my allies? All I want to do is hit things, I don't want responsibility!

In most MMOs even, the tank is the guy with the shield. Not the giant 2h a bunch of the time.
