It should actually be possible for the SE devs to make a barefoot vanity item... Who knows maybe someday? It doesn't seem to be high on their to do list at the moment.

I joined an FC for the exp bonus only and immediately muted their chat >.>, I think I'm used to a different style of gaming.
Frankly, I think that this is a cultural thing with the Japanese developers more so than a technical issue. The "no boots" model uses white sandals that are very similar to the indoor footwear (Uwabaki) used in Japanese households, businesses, onsen, etc.
By the way, if you're traveling in Japan and have big feet like me, take your own slippers. It's really uncomfortable to have your entire heel hanging off the end of the size 9 sandal jammed onto your size 13 foot. Even when visiting factories, I was required to remove my outdoor footwear and use provided Uwabaki. On my repeat trips, I took my own.

My FC threw a big beach party the other day too for 4th of July. There were fireworks, champagne, dancing and all kinds of fun to be had. I didn't know we were doing it, and logged in to work on some MSQ, and got a tell saying to meet in Mist. Ended up being 2 hours of great fun!

This is also the reason because we can't have heels with bareskin shown.
They can't adapt the feet inclination to the boot, so they just replace any boot model with the basic feet model.
I guess they could create a boot model that resemble the original feet without additional textures? That way, they could bend the fake foot making the plant touch the ground.
But I'm just doing wild guesses, no one knows for sure how those model exactly work.
There is something I think they could do however to make this system of auto-sandals a little more bearable: make the basic sandals dyeable. That way, we could at least match them by customizable colours.
