Personally I would make the same call, they could have friends/family in the affected area, they could be shutting down servers so they can go help out the relief efforts. I would rather not take a chance of a random power outage nuking my servers, damaging data and such just because other people in my area are running their stuff at max.

Do you enjoy getting a rise out of people who actually give a damn?? I'm pretty sure at a time like this they could give a less damn about the game and their business and want their staff to focus their time and energy on helping their loved ones, mourn their losses and do whatever they can to contribute to help relieve Japan of this utterly horrible disaster. Also if anyone read the new in the last couple of hours?? There was another nuclear plant explosion. I would be surprised if they get the severs up by april at all. Anyway you really need to get a life and quit worrying about how SE runs their business and the damn game but if you can't do that then gtfo. Kudos.

I certainly can't disagree that they're are possible employees who may use this downtime to take care of loved ones, however I think I need to point out that SE HQ is in tokyo, they will not be seeing any power outages so worrying about it happening is pointless.

We are in fact having rolling blackouts in Japan. Most of the central 23 wards of Tokyo are not currently on the blackout list, but that is scheduled to change as TEPCO re-evaluates the situation.

    - The call to conserve power is not only coming from TEPCO, the power company. The prime minister is calling for it since there is a power deficit in eastern Japan. Weather forecast is for a cold spell starting tomorrow, and without electricity in northern Japan people are at risk of freezing.

    - If Japan has close to 60 reactors, it depends on where those reactors are. One thing many people outside the country don't realize is that western Japan is on a 60Hz system and eastern Japan is on 50Hz. This came about as multiple countries helped rebuild the country after WWII, and this means that the two halves of the country cannot support each other by sending power.

    - A third nuclear power reactor blew up this afternoon and the situation is still deteriorating.

    - Everyone is doing their part to conserve power. Whole data centers are shut down. If SE has their servers in a data center rather than on their own premises, the decision to shut down wouldn't even be theirs. Trains and other more important infrastructure are affected by the blackouts as well.

None of my Japanese friends are complaining about the servers being offline during this crisis. Sure, we are bored, lonely, scared with the continued aftershocks... but no one is even hinting that SE has some motive other than trying to do their part to conserve power so it can be used to save lives.

Just because the servers are down doesn't mean people arn't at their desk working. If the company was so charitable, they would have donated money or take their entire staff to ground zero and start the clean up or rescue..

Shutting down servers helps so little where keeping them up and and doing other things with that revenue would have possible made more sense.

I don't really care about the game being down, nor do I have an over whelming urge to play. In fact, it can be down for the next year while they fix all the crap for all I care. Therefore there is no selfish motive in starting this thread.

I just thought there was more to this than saving power because to me, saving power doesn't make sense when there is a lot more that could have been done that would have had much higher impact.

Mkay.. this is not only directed at you... but also the rest of the people who haven't seen the news.

there are growing fears of mass power loss. the Japanese government is asking businesses to reduce power consumption so it can be used/saved so it can be used when and where its really needed.

So you are saying that people on the 60Hz can use all the power they want, it wouldn't matter? Since Tokyo is on the eastern side and SE is located in Tokyo, the shutting down of servers is meaningless because of the 50 and 60Hz power?

I am glad that companies are chipping in and I hope everyone around the world will do what they can to help.

It is so easy to take advantage of people in times like this. Just jump on the band wagon. Someone says save energy so people start turning off power that won't even help. Why not take a step back, ask what the problem really is, what can we do to make the most impact?

We will save more lives and get Japan back on track faster by asking these questions rather than letting companies do what they need to in order to save face or do what the other guys are doing because if they don't they will be seen as the "evil corporation".

So clearly talking to you is like talking to a brick wall. why is it that you're the only one in this thread that doesn't get it? -_-
