I was admittedly disappointed that Rauban didn't just cut him down on the spot.Actually, Im not sure about that.
Notice that he made no move to wake the Sultana even though he could till Raubahn returned. Further, He could have avoided scattering the Scions if he wanted to with a few well placed words. He could have easily arranged for the Scions to escape as well.
Its telling he suddenly makes amends when he gains information that the Garleans have constructed a new flagship. Suddenly Raubahn and the Scions are valuable to him again rather than the annoyance they were before. You can also bet your bottom dollar Lolorito shored up his hold on power while he held the top position.
No I think what happened to the Scions wasn't collateral but intentional. Unfortunately the little bugger seems to have gotten away with it.
Hopefully he gets his comeuppance before the end of HW.
Please.
You mean like Absinthe? XDReminder that things like cyanide suicide pills exist in real life and kill extremely fast. I don't think the poison in the wine scenario is unrealistic.
Also Nanamo's dramatic reaction is totally understandable - it's not like she knew it was a sedative. I know I would panic the hell out if I drank something and immediately felt my body stop working.

Clearly, the best Final Fantasy character is Locke Cole.
Glamour is TRUE ENDGAME

In regard to the storytelling part of it, continue the storyline and you may find your answer. I can't really say much more without SPOILERSSSSSSS!I have seen this in countless stories before and have never really questioned it before. But is it really possible for some one to fall over dead a few seconds after drinking something with poison in it? It's a good story writing device but might be bad if it's not really feasible.
As for poisons in general, I'm pretty sure there are some that have instant effects, even if it is initially just paralysis followed by death soon after.

There was an interesting lore nugget buried in that plot. Dunesfolk have a habit of putting trace amounts of poisons and venoms in their tea so that they build up a tolerance to them. It is a cultural habit that developed due to living in desert regions with high quantities of poisonous animals.
