Scientifically, play is work. It's just work you happen to enjoy. Let's not kid ourselves into thinking that playing this game in any capacity does not (Scientifically) require doing work.

Furthermore, I would posit the question of what is the difference between grind and just plain playing?

Well, yes play is work, but there is still a difference between playing a game and working a store. The point is that you feel like you are doing something interesting and worth the time investment, thereby enjoying your time with it. I think a lot of people have issues with unlocking roulettes and getting flight access in this regard.

Well then, I say, If play is work (in the game as opposed to outside of it), then in the same fashion that we take our jobs one step at a time we should use the same view at persistent world games. The only thing I see in this thread is the need for the sense of "being rushed" or "Wanting to rush" to be met.

Trust me, I feel it too, I felt it when I was first leveling to 60. I would burn out and doze off while playing at 4am. I was feeding the rush. But now that I am at 60, on two jobs, I am starting to question if it was all worth it because ultimately the game isnt going anywhere. My friends arent going anywhere. And if we love to dote on the era long gone with old mmos, then we all must admit that many of our most memorable moments came when our friends made something happen while just hanging out in game. Not being rushed or pushed or anything.

Yeah, the entire rush mentality is a side effect of the design of the game systems. The issue is that people want to be able to play together to tackle content. But there are gear requirements and other things that get in the way of that, so there is this big rush to gear as fast as possible and hit max level to get access to everything. Even flight is a part of this, and there's basically no time to even breath until that daily roulette is complete and the dailies are finished.

I'm sure a lot more people would do crafting and other things if the game didn't actively encourage grinding currency on a daily basis. That or if they are going to do that, at least make it so the currency can be gained from just about anything one does, so people have a choice at what they want to do for the day be it solo crafting or dungeon diving.
