When in doubt, assume sarcasm
I got called an elitist today for the first time in my 20 years playing MMOs. We failed a few times on A3 because there wasn't enough DPS. To put it in perspective, myself and my fellow FC member were around 900 each while the DRG and BRD weren't breaking 600... On the first phases which are mainly just tank and spank. Too many adds kept getting to the pool because they couldn't kill their share in time. So, someone voted abandon. Because I didn't accept a raise after 4 of them hit the water and I knew it was a wipe, they called me elitist "just because I cleared it before" and blamed me for starting the Abandon Vote (which was actually started by one of the party healers). People rushing to conclusions is really annoying as while I take my job in game seriously, I'm actually a pretty casual player.
I have very little experience with MMOs in general. I have improved since I started to play FFXIV. But I am still easily confused and slow. Yesterday I tried Labyrinth of Ancients. This was my first raid EVER.
There was a fight with three lines. My line got wiped because of another newbie, we were to start again, I ran to a wrong group and I realized that only after pressing ready and starting the fight. Someone noticed that and started to shout that I should be kicked right after the end of this fight.
Other players asked him to stop being mean and started kick vote, I THANK those who where with me and supported me but I was hurt and disappointed.
I have a question for the community
Judging by the above mentioned story, raids will be painful for me. I know that I am not forced to do raids, so how do you think, will I lose too much if I never do raids again? + Is it possible to get minimum gear for Heavensward without doing raids?
To Snowbu: Don't worry at all and enjoy. In Labyrinth of Ancients nowadays there are many overgeared people who try to ignore the mechanics (thay maybe they don't know since it might be an old instance when they started to play) and also new people who may not know what to do. Nobody explains the fights because they all think everybody knows them, and you find much more wipes than you did a long time ago.
And in 24 player instances it is not rare to meet people who say rude things or misbehave in the alliance chat. Don't let that spoil your experience. The immense majority of players is nice but from time to time you meet the exception. Part of the difficulty of 24 player instances is coordinating that many players, the fights are not so difficult but they need some coordination and if it fails there are wipes usually. For some reason there is much more misbehaving in 24 player content alliance chat than in normal 8 player raids.
In raids (the 8 player ones) usually you would go with people you already know or from Party Finder. They are harder places and usually Duty Finder is not used, unless content is old, people are overgeared and wins are supposed to be easier. People in Party Finder are more polite usually, they are from your server and know you can easily meet again, there is not that anonimity of playing with strangers you will never meet again.
In 24 player content you would usually use Duty Finder and there is always more risk of finding drama.
Edit: I forgot about the gear: You can get all the needed gear without doing raids. There is the Archmagus quest that needs the three Crystal Tower raids and it gives items to upgrade poetics gear, but it is not strictly needed. Upgrading the weapon is very nice, though. I used to do the quest every week until the expansion appeared.
Once you start with Heavensward you soon start getting better gear as you do quests.

Indeed, humans need to show a little more compassion in the gaming industry. Where is the gaming Buddha showing us the path to our greatest potential, leading by example and performing clutch miracles?
I just look at it this way... the people who go out of their way the most to try and point out how inferior other players are (especially when the difference is just a lack of first hand experience) are probably the people who have the least to feel superior about IRL. For every character you meet in game who goes on the offense against other players every chance they get, there's a RL person who I guarantee would run away and hide from the people they pick on in game if they even glanced at them in a slightly menacing way out in the real world.
I'd bet you anything that the people being the most toxic in the game don't have much going for them in the real world.
Also Snowbu don't let one or two negative people cheat you out of being able to enjoy all the content the game has to offer by scaring you away from it. It's easier to focus on the small number of people will try and tear you down because they see you as a potential vulnerable target based on being new or whatever- and people like that are always looking for a target, and if it was a different new player there instead of you, they would have gotten the same treatment so it's not really about you, it's about them. So what I'd try to remember instead is the support you got from the other players.

snowbu you can gear without raiding, but what happen to you, happen to me the first time,
i can tell you : we make mistake to focus on them and not make them again, harder raid ask more focus and knowledge off course.
but you will not raiding without mess something.
so it's up to you to raid or not.
btw it's all the problem of this tread, new player complain from elitist or something, but you will not run hard content with pugs without having this problem. it happen even with older players, and it don't stop them from anything.
Irl things is more important but same XD, if someone insult you because you are weaker and tell you, you can't do nothing, if you accept this and think he is right, he win, you loose.
it happen a lot more on just a game because people is behind the screen but sill happen irl too.

It's hard, if not impossible, to say what we can do to make a mean (elitist) player nice. You can't offer them rewards, since we can assume that they are playing the content in question for a reward already, and will become hostile towards anyone holding them back from that reward. You can only go so far with punishment, since the same players can abuse the same system to their own ends. The easiest solution seems to be the very suggestion in the title of the thread. If you don't want to risk being subjected to sub-par players, don't pug. Build a bubble of friends that are as skilled as you in whatever content you want to play. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that, and there are plenty of tools in-game you can use to meet that end (LS, FC, PF). When you go into the DF, lower your expectations some. It's where the average player turns when they can't assemble their own party through their LS, FC, or PF, and chances are, the average player will be just that. Average. If you go in expecting as much, everyone will have a better time of it, and you just may be pleasantly surprised when your group turns out to be better than you'd hoped.
