snowbu you can gear without raiding, but what happen to you, happen to me the first time,
i can tell you : we make mistake to focus on them and not make them again, harder raid ask more focus and knowledge off course.
but you will not raiding without mess something.
so it's up to you to raid or not.
btw it's all the problem of this tread, new player complain from elitist or something, but you will not run hard content with pugs without having this problem. it happen even with older players, and it don't stop them from anything.
Irl things is more important but same XD, if someone insult you because you are weaker and tell you, you can't do nothing, if you accept this and think he is right, he win, you loose.
it happen a lot more on just a game because people is behind the screen but sill happen irl too.
