I have a secret to tell. From my electrical well. It's a simple message and I'm leaving out the whistles and bells. So the room must listen to me Filibuster vigilantly. My name is blue canary one note* spelled l-i-t-e. My story's infinite Like the Longines Symphonette it doesn't rest- TMBG Birdhouse in your Soul
A huge THANK YOU!!!! For FINALLY selling the Meteor Survivor Polo on the store. AND a huge thanks to my friend who bought it for me while he was at Fan Fest!!! YES I finally have my POLO!!!

I dont undertand you guys. Everyone here crying and shouting. " BUU BUU, WHY WE ARE NOT HAVING REAL DEADS BUU BUU" . First of all I want to said that Nanamo's return was a 50 chance probable. A lot of people on older topics talked about things they notice on the events on 2.55, and all the situations that didnt make sense.
If you guys think for a second, but I guess you already know. A real badass tragic and emotional dead was Haurchefant's dead. On my opinion was the most shocking event on HW, they not only showed a 100% dead here, they also showed all the emotions that the WoL had. When he hold Haurchefant's hand and when he made his tomb. Comon guys dont cry about this "fake deads", here on HW we had some super emotionals dead here :P

eh not everyone in here is crying about it ya know

I had my emotional death in VII.I just want to get rid of useless characters.
Did you notice that from 1.0-2.5 it was basically "Please go and do this important thing while we stand here and wait for you to turn in the quest", or I am almost ready to move but I can't find my bikini so please look for it while I wait for the dust to gather" or "Can you talk to that person on the other side of the room? I am shy."
Now with the Scions missing in action it was all: "Negotiaiton with Iceheart? Let's all go." "Gather fruits, and meat? Okay, you gather the meat, we'll get the fruit." "Kill a Primal? Bahh, I also have the echo. You don't need to go alone." "Slay Nidhogg? I will take the eye and weaken him." "I talked to him and he said...."

Oh wow, it only hit me now after reading your post. That explains why I enjoyed the story and npc's more.
But I always complained about the scions with my friends on skype. And we mostly agreed that having the scions and the entire crystal braves was the thing that made the story less interesting. Mind you, it's still a good story but one that usually left me with a bitter aftertaste.
Here's the thing. Our WoL, our playable character is by nature an adventurer. I can't speak for everyone. But I think we play mmorpg's for the feeling of adventure. And having a story where we've become chained to some group of people that stay at the same place, like bureaucrats. Isn't doing us any good. That is why ffxi stories always felt more interesting. We remained adventurers, that found new adventures.
I was overjoyed at the final cutscenes at the end of 2.x. My first reaction was a nice "Yes! Freedom for my character to explore again in the story! And not be this political figurehead for the scions!"
But having now completed 3.0, I don't mind reuniting with them. But I really hope we won't see much of that type of story. Y'sthola is a good step in the right direction imo.

I'm sorry, but if you remove the Scions and Crystal Braves from this game then what exactly is the story that you have left to enjoy? I do feel that it was a little cheap that Y'shtola lived through her event as cinematically it seemed she and Thancred were dead, but at the same time I know SE likes her and she's a really good character so they didn't want to throw it away. If you want endless death and nihilism then there's western RPGs and GoT, but the only death I'm split on so far is Nanamo. The narrative was strong with her dead, but Raubahn's joy that she was alive was such an excellent thing.
That being said, SE has used up its get-out-of-death free cards as far as I'm concerned. From now on, people need to stay dead. Ysayle and Estinien, sadly, should not return in any form. They've been killed off. Death has to have some meaning. Yda and Papalymo, I'm positive, are alive, Minfilia is too useless to die. Hau's death was very well done and impactful, but at the same time you don't want to go Game of Thrones because everything sucks so who even cares?
I guess I don't get the whole "my character is free thing," because the WoL isn't really a character at all. You just move through the game to see other characters interact.
But this is 3.0. Counting the game out at this point is absurd, since 2.0 had no meaningful death beyond Noraxia, IIRC. It was post 2.3 that we started to see people really suffer. As for the complaint about adventurers, that's very... I don't know, boring. Go play WoW? We actually have a story that involves more than "kill 10 of these," so why are you complaining? I guess it's a holy grail of FFXI thing.

and on the same note she's living on borrowed time because of her eyes. (still it would be kinda odd that she was announced for dissidia, and then killed off shortly after in the game she's from.) i really hope they act on the "using your eyes to see aether drains your life-force" and not just forget about it.
same, though i still very much enjoy the prospect of the crystal braves on the run.If you want endless death and nihilism then there's western RPGs and GoT, but the only death I'm split on so far is Nanamo. The narrative was strong with her dead, but Raubahn's joy that she was alive was such an excellent thing.
that's the thing about silent protagonists. they have minimal personality because the devs let you put it there yourself. some call it lazy story-writing, but frankly i have trouble playing games anymore that don't have silent protagonists/characters i create. i don't like the fact that i'm forced to always stoically nod for most conversations, but 3.0 was a step into the right direction with the DRK questline, and the quest after the vault.I guess I don't get the whole "my character is free thing," because the WoL isn't really a character at all. I trust FFXIV's writing team too much to believe they'll forget about the fact Y'shtola did something that has serious repercussions. As far as MMO writing goes, this story has been by far the most consistent and driven. If I had any complaint it'd be more that some things don't fit like... how we defeated the Twin Ascians and then 13 primals, alone, without even needing to break a sweat really. They could have at least referenced us invading with a massive group like the end of 2.0, right? But ah well.
As for deaths, I think and this is just my view, that SE is more confident in the game's success now. 3.0 didn't feel as "final" as 2.0 did, because I think they have their patches lined up already. There was a huge tonal shift though, because I think people expected us to be hunted and they resolve that quickly.
Definitely. In my opinion, the thing that ruined SWTOR was too much input but this game skates going the other way. They have a story but not enough input.that's the thing about silent protagonists. they have minimal personality because the devs let you put it there yourself. some call it lazy story-writing, but frankly i have trouble playing games anymore that don't have silent protagonists/characters i create. i don't like the fact that i'm forced to always stoically nod for most conversations, but 3.0 was a step into the right direction with the DRK questline, and the quest after the vault.
