Maybe you'd prefer a more action based MMO like Elder Scrolls Online or something to that effect. It seems you don't enjoy what FF14 has to offer (and it's the best imho in the genre).

Scroll down to the section with the Limsa Lominsa quests. The ones in that list are the ONLY ones you should be doing.
The ones which have no flaming meteor icon are best left for any second/third/fourth class you need to level. And you will need to level a couple to certain classes to specific levels for the skills you require for your main job of Warrior.
Not sure how you went wrong because you step off the ship 40 seconds after the cutscene ends and your first main scene NPC is standing right in plain sight and he points you to who to see next [ the elevator guy in the yellow coat].
All the NPCs give you clear directions on who to go to and where.
You are stuck in that zone until you complete the intro 24 quests and are sent to each of the other cities by the Admiral. The is the 'Lominsan Envoy' quest and once you're sent back to Limsa that's when things spice up.

Yeah-- FFXIV is a game I'd mostly recommend to those that like CRPG/JRPGs, or perhaps a few other types the game has elements from, but it's not for everyone (and there's really nothing wrong with preferring other genres).
I think I would only recommend he continue if he's seen FFXIV's raiding and really wants to do that, or something.
This is an MMO and while it is more story centric than most MMO's it doesn't change the fact it will not play exactly like a single player RPG. Something else to keep in mind is like most MMO's the higher the level the more content you have access to so will always start off less interesting at low levels. Thanks so much for all your help guys! I really appreciate it! I played for another six hours, just grinding down main quests.... and I had to stop, I just couldn't take it anymore. Each quest was very uninteresting, and although I did get to this really cool boss battle (Right after the Serpent guild fight, or something) but I just got to the point that I couldn't put in anymore time.

Although this is somewhat off-topic my biggest suggestion to you OP would be to find a Free Company to join. A lot of people that are new to MMOs tend to start off by playing them as they would a single player game but MMOs are social by design; you're expected to be playing with other people. A lot of the content is rather mundane in nature (though it does get consistently better as you get higher in level) and it is the social aspect of the game that often keeps most players interested.
As for the story though, up until level 15 you're essentially in the prologue. Things start to get interesting after level 20 but there are a few particularly slow moments running errands in the 30s. After 40 everything kicks off and it starts to feel like a true Final Fantasy game. The developers wanted to keep things simple at low level in order to introduce new players to the game slowly, but I think most would argue it is far too slow as many players get bored in those first few hours.
More than anything though I really would suggest finding people to play with in game and ask them for assistance when you need it. It's that social aspect that truly makes MMOs shine.
When I first started playing, I didn't like it either. I started in Limsa Lominsa too. So I put the game down for a while. Then couldn't play for a while. Finally came back to it and started in a different area (Gridania). I find it much more enjoyable this time around.
Before you give up on the game completely, try out a different class and starting area.

Well, quests on the overworld will not ever really get terribly interesting, barring a handful of exceptions.
That said, at around level 10 in the main story you'll be able to start unlocking Guildhests, which are your first group-based content; and starting at level 15 (again, in main story progress) you'll start heading into dungeons with parties to progress the tale. The dungeons, and later the Trials (Dedicated party boss fights) are generally the highlights of the game and make the slower parts of the story worth.
