If people are forming friendships in a game, why can't they form a romance over time? That has to start with some kind of flirtations.

I don't care if guys want to play chicks in a game. It's not for me, and personally I don't understand why a straight guy would play a chick aside from preferring to look at a girls butt as he runs from Ul'dah to Gridania over a guy's butt.

However I do think people should have the courtesy to be up front with the people they play even somewhat regularly about their real gender and/or sexuality, especially if a guy starts hitting on them.

Now my rule was always to never hit on girls in video games, because you just never know. But some people are going to look for relationships in a game, especially given how much time some people spend playing them. I don't think it warrants others calling them out for it, we all walk different walks, and we all have different situations, so let's not judge each other on that level, but like I said, I think that guys who play chicks owe it to other guys to let them know that they're guys, regardless of their sexuality... to do otherwise is, in my opinion, selflish, classless, and dishonest, given the embarassment it could cause someone.

In saying that I don't condone selfish, classless or dishonest pick up tactics either... it's a two way street, but really, the word is respect. We all fail to show it from time to time, I know I have here on these very forums on a few occassions, but we all want it from others, so we should all strive to give it to others... after all that's generally how we end up getting it back, right?

I suppose that I should add that I meant that a person should reveal their sexuality if they're playing a chick and a guy starts hitting on them. I don't expect people to be introducing themselves as gay/straight/bi to every tom, dick and harry that joins a party with them.

The two subsects can't obviously cover everyone in the world. There are obviously a few people out there who feel they are "Trapped" as the wrong gender and playing as the oposite gender is the perfect way for them to express themselves.

Although the chances of these type of people revealing that fact to someone who they don't know well enough for that to be a normal conversation topic would be fairly rare I'd say. I'm sure there are a few "manthras" who are gender confused in that sense. Thats a whole different beast alltogether and then it turns into what you feel is morally correct.

Personally all the power to them. MMO's are an escape from reality, let them live on the game how they want to live.

Hah, you do kind of resemble your character.

Being black, I found it surprisingly difficult to get actual "African" elements into the look of my character... most of the features are subtly European and such -- it was kind of disheartening, I really wanted my character to look as much like me as possible.

I had a korean pal who played with me, he complained that all the characters were all white (which I tried telling him there were other skin tones) or some annoying white cat chick (and there were barely any similar skin tones for minorities and if there were, they either weren't dark enough, or no yellow-ish shades that he could fit into) I could see his disappointment however. (I played an elvaan in FFXI *some of you can guess what model I chose from the look of my XIV character* because it was as close to a black person I could ever get, but It was a decision I'm completely happy with now) Perhaps we can send in a few complaints about the very limited character options (I mean, THIS IS supposed to be a NEXT GEN game after all..)

For me, I'm much more weirded out by the men who think they HAVE to play a male character.

The ones that pick the prettiest male or the beefiest one they can find, were you instantly attracted to his body or face? Sounds creepy to me, maybe something you feel you have to prove?

A few of my best online friends from the early days of FFXI until now played and still play female characters because we enjoy the aesthetics of them. None of us and I assume the majority of the men that do play them are not the closet trolls you like to pretend they are.

I'm going to chime in here and state this seems to be mainly an american problem.

I'm british. I play a mithra (I chose it in XI 'cus I heard they make great rangers) And continued with the same character into XIV. Anyone I meet in game usually knows I'm male within 5mins.

Hell, in XI I supposedly had a lesbian come-on to me thinking I was female. who knows. eh?

The funny thing is. This wouldn't be a problem if guys would stop trying to treat this like E-harmony and treat it as an online game. the reason a guy chooses a female and vise-versa is not anyone else's business. There is nothing wrong with it besides what your shallow minds think is wrong with it. Every problem you can think of about the whole situation would disappear if people would stop trying to date every thing that has a pair of breast.

I don't understand this mentality at all. A straight man wants to play a female character, it's because he likes looking at a girls rear instead of a guys. A straight man wants to play a male character, it means he's 'manly' and wants his character to reflect his gender.

But when a gay man plays a male character, he's a pervert who likes looking at a guy's ass all day. If a gay man wants to play a female character, he's a pervert who's trying to trick straight guys into thinking he's a girl, or worse he's a pervert who actually wants to be a girl.
