There is pretty much two main aproaches when people creat a MMO character.
Party A: I create my character to represent the ideal me, what I find most represents a ideal me. When I accomplish something in the game I accomplished it, I am my character.
Party B: I creat my character to represent my ideal character, what I find most interesting. When I acomplish something it's they who are sucsessfull due to my actions, my character is not me.
It's a main distinction to wether people play their avatar as themselves or just a proxy to play the game. Those who feel like their avatar is pretty much themselves will tend to create characters of the same gender / physical appearance or based on their ideal physical condition. While the latter treat their avatar as just that, a tool to play the game with. The avatar is a seperate entity to them and not a extension of themselves in the online world, so they choose to pick it by what is asthetically pleasing to them including different genders.
Nothing strange or creepy about it. Some people just don't conform to everyone elses silly ideals and have their own....who woulda thunk it. By the way I fall into Party A.
A guy using a female character, and vice versa, is still strange and creepy to me :-/
Even when you try putting logic to it, with your Party A, B speech.
I just can't help but shudder every time a "female character" finally reveals that "she's" a "he", after weeks of thinking otherwise >.<
I could care less I'm not having sex with you no matter what you are so it doesn't effect me to consider you male or female.
I always just assume that the char is the gender until proven otherwise and i'm not asking them either because it doesn't effect me anyway men and women can do the same in game. Don't care.

Who cares what sex you are in a videogame... it's NOT REAL for Christ's sake, if the player's good and it's fun to be with, why do you care if he/she plays a different sex in a game?
You could be an asexual blob of green mass in the game and I wouldn't care, all that matters to me is that I have fun playing with you in the game.
I choosed Miqo'te as my race, because I like the character design and never played a cat race before and I don't really like the other races.
As for the relationship thing... well, how about... NOT trying to hit every girl character you see and just enjoy the game? If you want to be in a relationship so bad, man up and look for a girl outside.

The alpha and omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.
Solution: Consider everyone a male until evidence shows otherwise. That or just don't worry about the "Person" behind the screen. I generally take characters at face value until I know otherwise female characters are female. It's not like I'm trying to hit on them so the gender really doesn't phase me either way.A guy using a female character, and vice versa, is still strange and creepy to me :-/

I guess it's different values I guess. I just don't get how someone is "Creeped" out by the fact someone prefers to play a female character instead of a male one, now if they are trying to "Trick" you then thats another issue all-together. Them be trolls.
Two different examples: 1)My roommate is an African-American Male. He rolls as a Caucasian (or light skinned) Female in every MMO he plays. He also uses Ventrilo for guild activities and his deep voice is undeniably masculine. He does not pretend to be anything but himself. 2)I have played with a Female Mithra on another linkshell who refuses to use Ventrilo or Skype or any voice software, even when other guild members offered to purchase it for "her". This person also refuses to show any pictures. This person also uses their in-game femininity to get drops/loot first because ladies first.
1) is called in-game Role-Playing 2) is called manipulative and mental
i know a female who plays a male in game just so she dont get hit on. Also i like to know the sex of the players i play with often just so i can say he or she without offending them. a little off topic but whatever.
oh, and i know someone who worked as a gm for wow aad he handled claims all the time about "girls" ripping off dudes. example: "girl" was in an in game relationship with guy, girl says if you trust me let me hold all you money for a min and ill give it back. guy gives money, girl turns out to be guy and does not give money back. guy files claim, gm says you beat. so people should be careful of this type of manipulation.
