It's kind of like Pokemon.

Balancing would be an issue like Dreamer said, they'd have to assume everyone one in the group will use their summons so either their dmg will be made worthless or the bosses impossible or close to without using them.
I really don't like this idea personaly, I love summoners and I hope they can be a playable job in this game as well.

I kept meaning to post an idea I had that was basically this just a little more fleshed out.
Everyone could get a summon through a long quest or primal battle. The summon would entitle the holder to the use of a big spell or buff that is on a longish cooldown something like 10-20 min. The wrinkle to this would be similar to what someone mentioned above. You would be able to choose from a list of abilities the summon has. Each summon could come with a set of say 3 abilities that would play well to certain classes. How do you make this so it's not overused? The CD of all current party members' summon will have their CD reset upon use. So it would be something that you could only use once every 10-20 min.
People saying they'd rather have a summoner class altogether. I agree with that completely. I think you could have a system like this in place where to open up the summoner class to use you have to attain 1 primal. What would make summoners special is their access to the summons similar to how pet classes work in other MMOs. Each ability that your non summoner has is stronger when used by the summoner and each summon could come with summoner specific abilities that only that class can use.
Just to give a specific example lets say Bahamut is a primal that you can acquire. Your normal adventurer class acquires him and decides to set his ability they use as Mega Flare. Summoner's acquire Bahamut and gain access to Gigaflare which would be a more buffed up version with a nice spell effect similar to how summons have worked in prior FFs.
Summons have always been one of my favorite parts of the final fantasy games and I would love to see something like this appear in FFXIV.

Players could have a "summon" type ability based on their current job+diety (the one you choose at the beginning), and summoners could have the classic primals/avatars. I could compromise like that, but I would not like it if everyone could summon avatars.I kept meaning to post an idea I had that was basically this just a little more fleshed out.
