Technically, the form of battle content we often call "primals" are actually "Trials", we just all call them primals, ending up with this ambiguity.

Alexander is a raid (which refers to its content classification), and a primal (which refers to its position in lore). There is no content classification called "primals".

There is a difference between primals (a summoned boss created by Aether) and a simple trial (just a boss).

I refer to the Dungeon Finder classification of Dungeon, Trial, Raid, Guild Hest, PVP. Primal (HM+EX) fights are classified as Trials, together with certain other non-primal trials. Whether that fight is against some existence created by Aether, is a lore classification, not a content classification.
