Japanese vs English Population on Tonberry

Hey folks.

I'm currently on Masamune as it was designated the unofficial Oceanic Legacy server at the launch of 2.0. At first there were plenty of English speakers, but that seems to have died off so now it's almost all Japanese. That's not a problem for me, as I'm fluent, but it's a problem for my Oceanic friends who want to play with me.

So I've been considering a move to Tonberry, as it's the non-Legacy unofficial Oceanic server. My Oceanic friends would be able to get along much more easily, but I'm concerned about the Japanese population. If I moved, I would move with my wife. But my wife is Japanese and she's not confident with her English (even though it's really good). So she would only feel comfortable if there was a significant Japanese presence.

So my question is, what is your feeling on the Japanese to English population on Tonberry? Roughly 50/50? 70/30? Thank you in advance for your help.

From my personal perspective, English players are more prominent outside Duty Finder. FCs, Party Finder, Hunts and Linkshells are predominantly English but when it comes to Duty Finder, it's predominantly Japanese.

If you think about it, it makes sense because Duty Finder is from a Data Center not a server. In saying that, MOST of my Duty Finder experience with Japanese pugs are very very pleasant. They know their fights. If they dont, it only takes them a couple of tries after a few encouraging Auto Translate {Don't worry about it} {Let's do it}. Even when I make the mistake myself, a lot of the time, Japanese players encourages me to keep going too. Albeit the jaggy auto translate...

I can confirm that your Oceanic friends are going to enjoy it here in Tonberry but the only downside that i can think of is population. As you might have heard, populated servers got instances (makes it inconvenient but good in the long run) and if SQenix gets a moment where they didn't anticipate the amount of people logging in, it could stress the server and do all sorts of lags and disconnects.

There's one also big FC Japanese FC here - NGC. Prob one of the biggest FC around and sponsors the FFXIV nico nico channel. Not sure if you are aware not long ago, they hosted one nico nico even and Yoshi-P was on our server streaming the gameplay.

However if your wife is keen on hardcore raiding on Tonberry then that might be a little headache though, because the Japanese players here are mostly more casual. I've seen a few cases where Japanese players who could speak decent English wanted to raid with EN players for Savage because they said that the JP players aren't too keen/hardcore about it.

Like others mentioned here, EN players are predominantly more vocal and open on Tonberry, it might make it seem that it is 70/30 but in actual fact it is really 50/50. The JP community mostly keep to themselves and often than not they host their own community events, across FCs and what not. Your wife should have no problem fining an FC and company of Japanese pals here.

Follow-up question(s): Someone mentioned that it is a crowded server... How much does that affect playing times? How long are the queues during peak hours? Are there ever any times where it's "impossible" to get on like Balmung? Lag and server crash issues?

Waiting time are less than 5 minutes even if your queue number is high in the 70-80 (which is the only high number i saw once during launch day) so no worries on that. So far i have not encountered any instances whereby it was impossible to login and the normal days longest queue i got was 16th in line which is less than 2 minutes wait to get on. So far it's a pretty awesome server and people are friendly. I've not encountered nasty or unruly players or drama about Hunts on the general chat at all but rather people are helping one another whenever anyone spotted a Hunt target.

We are highly populated but no where near the worst of NA servers

Other than major raid patches where it takes longer to get on but it isn't impossible to get on.

Server crashes that requires an emergency maint were rare, those were the days of patch 2.2 when it last happened that I recalled.

Instance crash might happen though. Like when the world goes nuts on S rank (there are a few times where everyone got DC'd during an S rank or Odin), then yeah. But again this would happen anywhere too.

Great, thanks everyone. I think we'll end up moving there, though we still hadn't finished our Bonding Ceremony, so have to wait until Friday now for that.

Speaking of which, anyone know if characters are still bonded if they are transferred? I know one of the restrictions for transfer is you can't have the quest active and you can't have any reservations or invitations... but it doesn't really mention anything about the consequences of transfer for people who already finished the quest.

If the character you are bonded to is not moving with you, then everything regarding the bonding will be obsolete. I finished everything with one back on Cactuar and I ended up having to move to Tonberry, but she had to stay unfortunately. The ring that I had was blanked out save an Anniversary date. It makes sense since the name doesn't exist on the current server, but yeah~

I'd also like to move my friends to Tonberry for the same reason, but it seems creation is always closed now. How often does it go up?
