I have put in a ticket. SE are now investigating the problems I have encountered. It is now a case of wait and see. In the meantime I have updated the versionI was playing on the PS3 to allow me to play HW.
I just got a slightly more interesting reply from SE support on this...
"We thank you for your feedback regarding this.
Our development team has been made aware of the issue that has been experienced by our customer who own Mac versions of the game. We can only advise you to keep an eye out for any updates regarding this on our official media and advise us if you need assistance.
We apologise for the inconvenience caused and again thank you for the feedback."
So they are at least aware that there's a general issue and are looking at it. Understandably there's not much more they can say about it than that until they've figured where the problem(s) lie.

Important Information for Mac Version Players (Jun. 25)
The following includes information on preparing to play the Mac version of FINAL FANTASY XIV, and important notices regarding certain game-related features.
■Before Using the Mac Version
Please look over the Mac Play Guide on the following page for information on important topics such as installing the game, controls, and navigation of the user interface:
http://sqex.to/Rf3
■Mac Version System Requirements
Please ensure that your computer meets the minimum system requirements shown on the following page:
http://sqex.to/SZu
■Warning for Users Who Started Up FFXIV Before Service Began
We have confirmed an issue wherein unintended files were created if you started up the Mac version of FINAL FANTASY XIV before Jun. 23, 2015 12:00 a.m. (PDT).
To resolve this issue, please delete the files located in ~/Library/Application Support/FINAL FANTASY XIV/
■IME (input method editor) Support
The Mac version of FINAL FANTASY XIV supports the OS’s default IME to input special text characters.
Please note that any other IMEs may cause text input to not function properly.
We are currently focusing on finding ways to display IME mode changes while in fullscreen mode. Further information on this will be provided as it becomes available.
■Transferring Configuration Settings from Windows to Mac
Users can back up their game settings from the Windows version and transfer them to the Mac version.
Please look over the “Backing Up Game Settings” section in the Mac Play Guide:
http://sqex.to/Rf3
Please note however that the backup file cannot be used while it is still on a USB device.
Unfortunately, for most of us, the above addresses the problem not at all.
Right, in my specific case, I think the nVidia GT 750M with 4 Gb is slightly better than the Iris Pro. I could be wrong, though.
I would buy a Mac client if it was native and works. I was really excited for this, and it is quite a let down.
This totally sucks!
Refund or just let us play on windows.
The information for the Mac OS X version was not available at the time of purchase. This has been edited way after this and just trying to avoid a bullet with the latest high end OS X machines. Even tho playing under Bootcamp is way better than the OSX version. SquareEnix: get on top of your games! This kind of unreliable information and confusing communication towards your customers can land you a big loss and should not be tolerated by anyone buying the game.
SE, deliver what you promised!!
The specs outlined in their new post don't seem to jive with what was available/discussed previously. What's going on, SE?!
