Perhaps only if you are on the City to City race quest have the mobs but otherwise if you are just riding your chocobo to LL instead of taking the ferry, then I say the tunnel should be clear and safe just as if you were taking the ferry.
What's the point of racing on vehicles that all have the same speed =( Honestly.
They should have some sort of system like Ocarina of Time's horse riding stamina that you could control.
Imagine a racing game with fixed car speeds. Not that exciting.
I'm all for chocobo racing if it's done with some gameplay included.

So the race would/could be an instance of sorts? Hmmmmm might actually be kind of cool even if not for the tunnel idea but just in general. I do think it would be rather entertaining to see a whole HERD of Chocobos and their riders scurrying across the fields. Could you imagine just seeing this cloud of dust and maybe actually hearing the thunder of all the choco feet slamming the ground? Idk, have this mental image. I may not b explaing it well enough so sorry. :-/

Uuuuuh.. i liked that Minigame. I would like to see something similiar in FFXIV.FFXI had a Chocobo sorta mini game/quest where you would rent a chocobo at a city and npc would tell you to ride from Grindnna to Ul'Dah and completion on staying on chocobo and reaching the zone location would rank you on your time and give you gil.
Before renting chocobo they would mention who has the fastest speed time for completing that in the server.
Id like FFXIV to add ther own kinda quest within the game and maybe add some adjustments to it.
