Just got to SCH54 and I think you're on the right track.
Surito Carito names Mhach (the Mhachi) the enemy of Nym; their magi trafficked with the void and used the knowledge against their enemies.
If we're going in the right direction, the Mhachi are likely responsible for both the Sickness from the Sea as well as Diabolos...

So by that logic, since Amdapor and Nym were wiped out by Diablos and The Toneberry Plague respectively, wouldn't that make the Mhachi the winners of The War of the Magi since their decendents presumably became the Belh'dians and later the Sil'dihns and Ul'dahins?

I think it was more of a Pyrrhic victory at most

    Nym fell to the Sickness

Amdapor had to deal with Diabolos and his voidsent minions. They were successful but were probably greatly weakened;they survived the flood and were probably the predecessors of the Gelmorrans.

I think it eneded up being a war with BLM/WHM now that Nym succumb to the sickness. Perhaps the BLM ended destroying themselves? Other than Qarn, there's nothing about the BLM city. Despite both Nym and Amdapor being flooded (until the 7th Umbral Era) Thanalan does not have a large body of water to conceal a lost civilization that the Elementals want to hide.

I always had a belief that Amdapori WHM had Time/fate magic similar to what Louisoix used in Carteneu. They were descibed as
1.having "powers to alter the very fabric of existence"
2.Due to the prayer to of Althyk (god of space/time) located near Amdapor
3.In 1.0 you see Elemental (teacher of WHM) make people literally disappear from existence

Perhaps in a last ditched effort the remaining WHM casted a powerful WHM to make the BLM capital "disappear" from existence?

Thanalan has something that's far more thourough at hiding things. Sand. The temple of Quarn it's self has been partially consumed by the deserts and there are tones more ruins in South Thanalan that could be anything from parts of Sil'dih, ruins of Bela'diah, The Lost Mhachi civilization or even belong to the people who built Quarn that predated the War. Quarn was mostly used as a Temple and Burial Ground by the Bela'diahns not a city after all. We still haven't found the capital city that seems to have been consumed by the sands of time and the dunes of The Sangoli.

But I do agree the victory was a hollow one. The Gelmorans I don't think were survivors of Amdapor, IIRC they were people that came to the shroud post flood and hid underground out of fear. Bela'dian was actually founded by survivors of the War who fled due to Black Magic being shunned and it's mages persecuted.

As for The Tonberry Plague or "Sickness from the Sea" it could have just as easily been Amdapor that set it on them but Nym was obviously the 1st to be forced out. Not to mention Nym was an unwilling participant any way.

We know that Temple of Qarn wasn't originally Belah-dian. Could it possibly originated with the Mhachi civilization?

I think so. The Mhachi likely controlled territory that far south.

I think its hard to tell at this point. Frankly there is so much of Eorzea's history we don't know there are potentially several other contenders. Half the Astral Eras we know nothing about, including the one between the fall of the Allag and the rise of Mhach, Amdipor and Nym.

I think its stated somewhere that Mhach was located somewhere to the north of Mor Dhona, so unless the Mhachi domain was half of Eorzea it wouldn't make much sense for Qarn to be theirs.

Northwest. In the Yafaem Saltmoors. Koji said it in an interview, I believe.

So The Yafaem Saltmoors are NW of Mor Dohna, Hmmm, I wonder where that relates to Coerthas and Dravania.
