So... Au Ra really don't "fit" into the story well, as playable characters

He actually does shed some light on the xaela.

To prove a point, he talks about the hostility ishgard showed them when they initially came to coerthas. when they were first attacked, they showed mercy to them and let the ishgardians go, only to be attacked again with a fury that only halone would know. To ishgard, Au ri were no better than dravinians.

It does also seem really odd that NPC's etc seem to not take note of the large among of horned individuals running about out of nowhere. I had sorta assumed their migration was a recent thing like the Domans but I haven't seen anything concrete to back that up. Instead it seems more like its going to be glossed over as if they are an everyday occurrence.

i would just assume that the "world" simply altered so that they have always existed.

instead of "oh these horned fellows showed up out of no where," it's that they were already there.

One thing to note as well: Even if every player was, say, a catboy, lore wise there would not be that many running around. Yes YOU are (or a female Roe, or an Au Ra.), but as far as the story is concerned other players race choices don't affect anything.

As for the Au Ra and fantasia: Yes generally you are considered from a faraway land regardless of race, though it is still possible to have your headcannon put you somewhere in paticular if you really wish. As it is there aren't actually a ton of Au Ra adventurers running around lore wise. For Fantasia, you either A.) Take it as a seperation of gameplay and story (like again how there aren't actually that many Au Ra running around Eorzea despite all the players playing them.), or B.) Its a magical potion that literally warps reality and you wonder who the devil made it and wether they could help you fight the Ascians with their reality warping powers.

True, there are fewer male Miqo'te in lore than in-game, but as far as I can tell, there are virtually *zero* Au Ra, with the exception of Lady Yugiri. A male Miqo'te that chooses the life of an adventurer would be rare, but not world-shattering news.

It would be like... Imagine there was an alien running around the world, clearly not human, but aliens don't actually *land* for another five years. And even when they did, to retroactively been responsible for all these larger-than-life deeds, which happen before their landing.

I honestly feel like a new starting-area could have made a huge difference. As it stands, it's just kind of hard to grasp where, exactly, the Au Ra are supposed to fit into the story.

That's why they didn't show her. The design of the Au Ra wasn't finished and they didn't want to set something that could be changed later. Aside from her tail, Yugiri was actually just a modified Miqo'te model at the time.

Each player basically exists in their own "bubble" where they are the Warrior of Light, and they alone are responsible for resolving a lot of issues in the game world (despite gameplay-wise it requiring a party or raid). This is just the nature of MMO's. Just because you see a lot of Au Ra running around, does not mean there actually are a lot. Since, lore-wise, each of you are the only one. Other players don't exist in your bubble, only NPC's do.

Just curious, are there *ANY* Au Ra NPC's in the game, besides Yugiri? Specifically, any Xaela? I would just be curious to know, what sort of "vibe" they give off. How do they talk? What kind of clothing do they where? Do they talk about their past at all?

There's Sigurdu or whatever his name is in the Forgotten Knight and he doesn't say much.. And there's a Xaela in the white mage post 50 questline. She literally stinks. She smells rotten.

It is made purposefully ambiguous where your character comes from, that way you can further elaborate your backstory with more freedom.

Au Ra were made with this in mind. Since your starting experience is on a carriage to (insert city-state here), you could make up all kinds of places you came from. So, as far as the narrative is concerned, you are a solo traveling Au Ra who wanted to broaden their horizons beyond Doma or Othard.
