Fios user here, game was unplayable from around 8EST onwards. I just started playing the game, is this normal? None of my other games lagged last night (I quit the game and tried the others), just this.

Is it because of pre-maintenance or is this something I should expect?

Past couple weeks or so me and my wife have been lagging out pretty bad. It's not our ISP cause this onpy happens on FFXIV.

Known issue for FIOS users. Especially those in the north east. Verizon has issues in the NY/NJ areas, among others. Some is because of localized issues, some is due to peering issues (Level3, Cogent, TATA, TiNet/SPA, or their own ALTER.net business class segments). Need to get a good diagnosis of your route to narrow down the congestion so they can adjust accordingly.

Again....everything else is not likely following the limited and congested routes specifically into Ormuco in Montreal. Need to have a proper analysis of your route done specifically to the address(es) your client uses to get to your lobby and/or world service in Montreal (and Japan if applicable) for THIS game. Comparing it to content served out of Chicago, Seattle, Los Angeles, etc. is not a valid comparison.

I'm in Florida, but I guess I'm just affected by it as well. I'm not home currently so I can't do a trace route right now.

Can they actually fix this? I've Googled this issue and there are a bunch of people who recommend using a VPN. Is that really a viable option? I like the game and would love to continue to play, but if I need a VPN to make it playable, I don't know if I want to keep playing.

A VPN is a useful tool for testing the issue, as it can be configured to bypass some potential routing issues (shaping rules, switch to different tunnels to find a cleaner path). It is a good workaround until the ISP's manage to clean things up, and is also good for demonstrating to your ISP just how f-ed your route may be without it (ultimately how I prodded TWC-SC into taking action. It was like night and day once I found a good path).

There are many VPN's out there that offer cheap/free usage options that you can try instead of paying for the gaming focused services like pingzapper and battleping. I used TunnelBear's free 500MB/month back during Beta4 and early launch to bring things into focus for my ISP. It wasn't always too good going through the Canada portal though...sometimes had to switch it to another area, but hey...it stabilized the game and it was FREE. I still use it periodically for security (like paying bills online and such)--nice service to have just in case. Lots of others out there have similar plans (so many hours a day or week and such). CyberGhostVPN and Hotspot worked OK when I tested them back then...I just stuck with TunnelBear because the 500MB was more than enough for my normal usage needs. You can also promote them on social media for an extra 1GB here and there, and it's not too bad a price if you find you need/want to use it more than the free options allow.

I have bad latency too and it makes Titan and Ifrit impossible. Probably because I'm in Australia and server is in Japan. Southern Hemisphere is the land of the peasants lol.

MAYBE THAT CAN HELP AT LEAST SOME PPL! - i cannot say for sure or what it caused exactly though.

I did play ffxiv just fine for years (ofc i didnt have the same ping like someone directly near the server but it was just fine, and no spikes).
It started like 2 months ago.

I didn't find a way to fix this. Then i also found more problems in other mmos. So i was... damn, must be on my side or something.
So i talked to a friend living close to me, who didnt have issues. so the provider wasnt the problem there either.

I then installed win 8.1. on another disk. And since then, the problem seems to be solved.
So MAYBE IT WAS SOME WINDOWS 7 FIX.

Give it a try - if you can or feel like it, maybe its also a good hint for SE

I've also been having lag spikes. It's mostly just stuttering. It's especially noticeable during dungeons when at times it take 2-3 key presses to get an ability off. The animation will start and then stop half way or even complete fully, but the ability will still be lit and no damage will be done, forcing me to press the button again. I have roadrunner. I've tried lowering shadows to 1024, enable triple buffering and vsync and even tried standard graphics setting instead of maximum. Nothing seems to be helping.

I have been playing JUST FINE, from January 2015 - May 2015 and then ALL OF A SUDDEN, every day EST from about 8-11 pm I get massive lag. I contacted Verizon FIOS about it, and I contacted SE about it and you guys had to audacity to literally copy and paste your 'router troubleshooting guide' and tell me to CALL YOU, using YOUR TOLL SERVICE. No. No way. LOOK at all these people complaining about the lag.

FIX YOUR LAG. Verizon 'can't do anything about it' and frankly I have had it.

    Verizon FIOS - New Jersey
    Weekdays 8-11 EST.
